Default 04 rear end temp

Hello, I re bearinged my 8.8 rear last year, both pinion and carrier bearings, now I hear a slight growly bearing like noise when I'm rolling to a stop, can't hear it above 4 or 5 mph. I put my hand on the pumpkin housing right after driving 20 plus miles, it's really warm almost hot, like I can put my hand on it but gets uncomfortably hot after a few seconds. How hot should a normal rear end get , or maybe my preload was to tight. Been running it for a year , but never touched it right after long drive.
Sorryfor long post. Thanks.

Under normal driving, not towing, my experience has been that they run just a little hotter than you can continously hold your hand on. Sounds like you're right there.

Well maybe the temp is ok, it's possible it could be a wheel bearing.

Maybe a dragging parking brake? If they drag just slightly they'll do about what you're describing.

A friction modifier might help. Does it growl or chatter when turning at low speed? parking lots etc? The local Ford shop here told me on my 04 FX4 that the limited slip doohicky will do that and sometimes cause a shutter and trying a bottle of friction modifier would be a good place to start if it's not too bad already. They sold the stuff there, said it was becoming a common thing. I've also seen it at the local OReillys. Might be worth a shot. I've never check mine for temp, only for fill level when it was cold. Good luck
