Default 04 5.4L Ticking Noise

I'm sure it has been addressed before, but I got overwhelmed searching for it on here.

I have the typical ticking noise with my engine. I have a Ford tech as a friend that has looked at it using the Ford IDS software. It may have a little noise from the phasers and such, but he says it's not worth going into right now and replacing them. The ticking noise is from what he says the 04 engines with the smaller oil passages and nothing can be done about it.

Are there any tricks that you all have found in helping with this noise? It's almost embarrassing at times.

Thanks.

The main - and most stupid - "trick" is to use a heavier oil. Arguments about this go on for literally years, but in short, heavier oil could lead to even more oil starvation (depending on what weight you ultimately choose). The proper answer is to replace your timing equipment, roller rockers, lash adjusters, and VCT solenoids, then do regular oil changes. IDS software won't show you any of these as problems because none of them have sensors, with the exception of the camshaft position sensors, and these problems don't trigger those until it's too late.

Are you sure the ticking isn't an exhaust leak from a cracked manifold? Or just noisy injectors? What kind of ticking? Does it do it when hot, cold, or all the time? Where is the ticking sound easiest to hear? Give us as many details as possible.

I didn't bring up that possibility because I assumed his Ford tech buddy would've checked for that

As StephenG said, have you delved into where the noise is coming from and when it occurs? Helps us determine the source of the noise and possible solutions. If it is the Cam Phasers we offer a Cam Phaser Noise Repair kit. If it is a cracked manifold, you could go with headers or just a factory replacement. Either way, determining the source of the noise is key.

Bear in mind, the more "proper" solution is to actually replace the phaser and its associated parts so the VCT system works properly.

^^^x2 Phaser noise repair kit doesn't actually repair anything it is a band aid to cover up the problem. Your choice is your choice though.

It is not an exhaust leak.

It it tends to be louder after it gets up to operating temperature. It has some of it when cold, but more prominent when the engine is hot.
