I would think the factory one is sufficient. I wonder if that ties into the integrated one in the radiator (left side, I think)? Or does our truck have an integrated transmission cooler in the radiator if we have that transmission cooler?

Is that the tow package cooler? There is a small (5 row?) and a large (9 row?) cooler. The larger one is standard on the tow package 5.4L. The larger one seems to work fine, and I've never heard of it lacking. Is your trans overheating?

I plan on keeping my tow package cooler, deleting the trans heat exchanger in the radiator, and adding an engine oil cooler. Between those three and a colder thermostat, I shouldn't have any overheating problems ever.

would think so too... i'm kinda towing on the limit.
the fluid goes through the radiator first then through this cooler then back to the trans

I never saw hotter than 148* on mine, even towing/hauling a combined 5k through upstate NY mountains and doing 65. If the system has proper flow and heat exchange, the stock cooler *should* be fine.

Mine would definitely get over about 175° commuting to work, then I changed it and it holds about 145° now.

I have the tow package with trans cooler . No way you should do away with the radiator part of the trans cooling circuit . I pull heavy loads in florida at 95 to 100 degrees .The stock system works . If your fan and coolant working and maintained it should be good to go . . Refresh your coolant using distilled water from wally world .Do not go over 50/50 mix . Radiators do go bad they really can't be fixed anymore ,tubes too Small . Good news they are cheap online . If you don't change coolant when you should and use quality stuff you will have trouble . Get it out of there, final flush with distilled water for sure ,boiling regular water will crust up with lime just like a tea kettle .Replace your coolant saver tank cap it is a pressure cap!!!!! Replace thermostat while you are at it . .Burp system with squeezes to top rad hose get air out .
I run an ac temp gauge on my trans cooler in front of radiator just to keep an eye on it . Heat kills transmissions . Use drain type pan on trans to keep trans fluid fresh .Every 30k or so .4-5 quarts at a time over several weeks . Mercon V only by the case .amazon .
My step sons were to poor to use anti freeze for two years , coolant turned to iron mud ,the redneck bulb under a covered hood stopped it from freezing but this destroyed motor and radiator .We had to buy a wrecked vehicle to get enough parts to fix it .
