You are right. A bit of weight in the back makes a big difference. I buy those 60lb tubes of sand. The only problem I have with them is moving them. At my age I can have trouble lifting that much weight. The nice man at the hardware store puts them in the back for me in the fall, but he's not there to get them out in the spring.
I was looking forward to some sexy lugged tires. My mechanic says they will be so noisy I will be unhappy and take them off. Oh well.

The tube sand is also what I use. I built a wooden frame that holds the sand bags directly over the rear axle so they can't slide around. I take that and the bags out usually in April.

He's right. The really aggressive tires get a lot louder. In between my sets of Destination AT's, I did run a set of 265/70r17 Cooper Discoverer AT3. They were 10x louder than the Firestones and didn't offer any better traction. On top of that, they weren't even super aggressive.
