Default Yet another TIRE question...

Time for new tires.

2011 FX4 Supercrew
  • 3.73 rear end
  • 3.5 Eco
  • SCT'ed so I can easily change speedo.
  • OEM take-off Raptor wheels (17" x 8.5", 34mm offset)
  • Bushwacker fender flares
  • Bilstein 5100 shocks, currently set at second-to lowest, ~.75" over stock
  • No body lift spacer in rear
  • Currently running 295/70-17 Continentals, near end of life.

Would like to replace with a tire that is:
  • Slightly taller than current
  • 'Snowflake' rated so I can run the in Winter in Colorado as well as summer.

I'll probably move the 5100's to the tallest position (~2.25" lift) and add blocks to balance the rear height, but ideally the tires would fit with minimum issues with the current setup so I can do the tires right away. Don't mind doing a bit of trimming either.

Suggestions on particular tires and specific sizes?

Thanks!

id look into the Nitto Ridge Grappler. Have a few sizes that could fit the bill in the 33.5-35" range. LT285/75, LT 295/70, 35x12.5. Keep in mind the 35x12.5 will likely not measure up true once on the truck.

Here is a picture of the ridge grapplers. I love them so far in the 4500 miles I've put on them. Friends have said they were amazed at how quiet they are on the road too. They handle monsoon rain (where you can't see in front of the truck) well too. They are pricey though.

How much taller is "slightly"?

315/70/17 (stock Raptor size) is just under 34.5" diameter and is a popular size. not much between that and the 295/70/17 you have now. There are a few tires in 285/75/17 or 305/70/17, both are about 33.8" (about 1/2" taller than current) but the tire selection can be a bit limited.

Did you pull the factory rear block? Maybe it's the flares, but it looks like a lot room out back with 295/70/17s and no block or AAL.

BFG K02 are exactly what you seek, I have 35x12.50x18 on 9" wide wheels which is the minimum width rim recommended for this wide of a tire, you could probably get away with an 11" wide tire in the same size and they have the snow flake rating, very quiet on the hwy, fantastic traction in rain. Only down side is they are a bit expensive.

I run the Nitto Terra Grapper G2 and I like them quite a bit. They are a 305/55/20 and with no lift of level they fill out the wheel well all the way but dont rub. I have also seen those tires on trucks with 2.5" lift and they dont look small under them either.

Well glad it wasn't my imagination... VERY little, especially when you factor in the 17"x8.5" Raptor wheels which I love and am not giving up. Guess I need to research more on how well the 315/70/17's will fit on a semi-stock truck with only a Bilstein coil-over lift.

Back is completely stock, except for the Bilstein shock swap which has no effect on clearance...

Nitto Ridge Grappler...

Looks like a nice tire. Does have an oddball size that might work well for me, LT305/70R17 which is about 1/2" taller at 33.86", but doesn't seem to have Snowflake Winter rating though.

The Nitto Exo Grappler AWT does have a snowflake rating, though not available in the 305/70R17. They do have them in 35x12.50R17LT, but that is likely too wide for the Raptor rims.

The 12.50 will fit fine on the Raptor wheels. Tons of people run 12.50s on stock wheels, including myself and the dealership mounted and balanced them.

BFG ALL-TERRAIN T/A KO2

Severe snow service (snowflake) rated.

If I step up to Raptor-size (LT315/70R17), this would likely be my choice. Doesn't look like they have anything else in a 17" that would work for me, not even my current 295/70R16.
