When steel corrodes we call it rust.

When aluminum corrodes it goes by the name of "Scale"

This has been a very informative thread. I also thought aluminum doesn't rust..so what happens when aluminum has fully rusted? Do we need a special coating on the hood if we get an aluminum one? I'm also considering one of those aluminum truck hoods for their weight savings but after seeing this thread I'm having second thoughts..

My 11 F150 has seen two strong hail storms. Zero dents in my hood.

Oh, here we go...another member having something positive to say, vs. the stridently negative.

I have been through several moderate to strong hail storms this past winter and spring here in the Sierra region and not one blemish on the hood. I was always more worried about my windshield cracking.

But then again, my '09 6-spd trans has never had a noteworthy problem either....no WTF's here. But as they say in TV, good news is no news.

The Major question is who asked when buying if the hood was aluminum and would this had made you not buy the F150!

So I go to my manager and get everything figured out. I take my truck to an auto body shop and get a quote. Apparently these aluminum hoods are super hard to get dents out of. They decided it's better off with a brand new hood. After everything the quote came out to $2400. I'll post pictures when I get home and the car that was parked next to me that got hit too. I'll take a picture of the quote too.
I'd just keep the dent and pocket the $2400. Everything is heading to the boneyard anyway, even us.

It's simply Fords efford in reducing weight. It's one of the benefits of having a Lariat Limited. Every little bit helps.

I'm sure you can get a steel hood and have someone paint it.

I have the '09 Lariat. East TN got major hail at the end of April and unfortunately we experienced the aluminum hood vs hail stones. Hood lost tragically. Total cost to fix... $7134 for the whole thing including windshield.
