Wow Be careful what shop you go to
Well I went by a "Reputable" Off-road shop today and let's just say I didn't stay too long. I Had called them on the phone earlier in the week and asked how much it would cost to install 4 Bilstein 5100 shocks with the adjustable fronts. They said $25.00 per shock..I was thinking "no Sh?!" sounds good to me. Asked what time they were open on sat he said 1030.
Stopped by there this morning, they were suppose to open at 1030..sign in the window not open till 1230. I just spoke to this guy on thur..... Strike 1. went and killed some time at the local Walmart...
Go back and its the same guy i talked to on the phone...Told him I called on thur and wanted to have my 5100s installed and wanted to know if he could match prices on wheels and tires. He asked me what I had, showed him a print out of the tires I wanted (295x65x18 duratracs) he threw the paper back at me and said have them order the Goodyears they make great car tires but ****ty truck tires. Strike 2...he then said those tires won't work because they would rub without a level or lift...I said ok but they will work with my bilsteins i was telling you about....He said shocks don't lift trucks..I said they are the adjustable 5100s and will give me 2.25-2.50 inches of lift..he shook his head and began to explain to me how shocks work...I told him I wasn't an expert BUT I knew that my 5100 adjustable shocks/struts would work and that I've seen a ton of pics on the f150 forum..he said you can't believe everything that is said on those thing but lets see what you got.
He walks out to my truck looks and the shocks and sees the rears first and said yeah ok, then he grabs the box with the front struts, pull them out takes a look at the groves on the strut and says....OHHHHH yeah I forgot Bilstien made these...yeah they will work but you will hate them..I had a customer ask me to put those on and he was back 3 weeks later asking me to put a spacer on.
So all of a sudden the shocks you "forgot about" you remembered were crappy?! Sorry sir you can't bullshi! a Bullshi!er
He then told me that Bilsteins were great but that they just messed up on these adjustable struts...REALLY you couldn't remember they made them but you know how crappy they are?!?!?!?
I went along for a bit just wanted to see what else he would try to feed me..He told my that I should go with 20's bc they had more tire options and that in 2-3 years I wouldn't be able to find good 18 inch tires because everyone was going to 20s.....
I said ok if I go with the 20s what offset would I need to run a 305x55x20 tire? He pretty much said don't worry about that, send your front bilsteins back and i'll throw a spacer on there and can show me the wheels you like and i'll order them for you.
Couldn't take anymore, told him I had somewhere to be and that I would be in touch.
Looks like the ford dealer will be doing the install, the shop I went to quoted me at $300 for all 4 after he found out the fronts were adjustable..Ford quoted me at $400

the best thing he could have done was to do exactly what you wanted, even if he was right... if you hated the ride, you would be back to get more work done, repeat customer 101
