Would you trade, or am I over reacting?

Change that to light duty full size truck.
With the mods listed he is getting the fuel mileage that almost all other Ecoboost 4x4 owner is getting at normal highway speeds, not this BS EPA rating. His odometer was more than 6% off from his wheel change, added to the 10-15% fuel mileage reduction from changing wheels.
It's pretty safe to say you would also be disappointed by the 5.0. It will not get 17/23 either
If you were getting 17/23 hand calculated from a cummins you should never have gotten rid of it. Stories of mid to high 20's from a full size diesel are usually just that. A story or a rare occasion converted to everyday for the benefit of one up-manship. Often things from the past are looked at through rose tinted glasses.

I don't see what you would be gaining by going to the 5.0. It isn't like you paid 10 grand more for the ecoboost. You basically would be getting the same truck and losing power, little bit of gAs mileage and 7 grand. Probably better going back to the diesel then to the 5.0. But then with your diesel you were getting 23 mpg, but Im sure the diesel was a bit more expensive.

"Paid $44000 plus the $5000 prepaid maintenance and extended warranty (never again), plus about $2000 in accessories."

5.0 is a great engine. I love mine. But puts those same mods on my truck, and I'd expect to be visiting the pumps every other day. Also, I have the 3.55's. I purposely chose them over the 3.73's for fuel economy potential. Did I gain anything? Really can't say. But I wouldn't want to be towing more than 5000 lbs. with them on a regular basis, let alone 8000 lbs.

A diesel needs to get at least 20% BETTER MPG with fuel prices to just be even with a gas vehicle these days. At 22hwy (and I routinely get 22+) the Diesel would need to get at least 26+. That on top of the initial cost of a diesel truck makes a fuel (gas) vehicle better for most people.
If you are always towing 7000+ ( I consider that a work truck) then a 3/4 Diesel makes more sense.

About the only thing I can say in the Ecoboost's defense is that if they are driven in the 50 - 65 mph range they get pretty fair mileage. Bump that speed up to 75 - 85 mph and there goes that...
My driving is in Houston and 65 mph just isn't in the equation - you'll get run over! My FX4 is finally settling in on 17 mpg most of the time and I am happy with that. There are times when a tank is a 16.0 mpg affair but I've usually done something to cause that.
There's no denying that there are plenty of posts here where the 5.0 is doing better on the gas, so the decision to change vehicles is your call....

There wasa a time (not long ago) where u had to get a F250 with the V10 if you wanted a strong gas engine. And you had to baby it to get 12 mpg. Now the ecoboost gives you the power the old v10 put out, in a F150 no less, and we gripe about 16-17 mpg......wow

Slightly off the topic but since we drifted into mpgs. Running my 5.0 27 miles each way to work at 80 mph for 22 of them got me between 17.3-17.6 by weeks end on the dash.
