I recently went to a dealer here in St. Louis and they had 40 trucks 35 eco-boost between the 2.7 and 3.5 and only for 5 L and one naturally aspirated six cylinder!

Honestly I think it's a deal trying to make it look like they're selling a ton of "fuel efficient" trucks, and they're likely trying to phase out the 5.0. Most people will settle if they can't readily find something.

The Ecoboost would never being thought/designed if BigBrother Government had not put a lash in the industry and forced the hand of the manufacturers in order to please the globalists, for they believe in the lie of global warming...

No customer was asking for smaller engines and certainly 99.999% of the customers were not asking for turbos.

Europe do have smaller engines and turbos and etc. because gas there is very expensive for they need to pay higher taxes because of all the gov. hand outs - (not because they want to "save the planet".
Also, Europe countries are small, the size of an US State, so a " Cross country" trip for them is like our regular weekend trip to see grandpa - completelly different operation environment so they may afford to have 1L, 1.3L engines and go camping with that.

Having to face the additional challenge to please the Government (are we becoming comunist???), Ford engineering did an amazing job trying to get some additional value to the customer (that needs to pay $1500.00 more to get the Ecoboost compared to the V8) in the form of a torque curve that looks like a diesel engine.
They had to do something because if the didn't, it will be very evident that the customer was paying more to have less or, in the best case scenario - the same, and that government led interference could be perceived by the customer as bad business practice from Ford side.

Bottom line: It didn't came from a need in the market or a technical breakthrough, it came from the blasphemy of Government interference and if Trump kills the stupidity of those regulations, it will not take longer for most those engines disapear.

The same " problem" (Government interference) is affecting the diesel engines and you can find a lot of videos in youtube were people that pay $70K in a pick up truck, buy a $1K " full delete kit" and void the warranty of their brand new truck taking all the "green technology" out of their trucks to end up with a more reliable, more powerful and more fuel efficient truck.

Again Government interference in the market only penalized the customer and accomplish nothing for now you have to drive a smaller engine (3.5) and get the same fuel consumption of a V8 and all of that paying more for it.

These types of comments are just silly. It's called truck owners doing what they want with their own money just like you. Unless you're stalking them, you've no idea how much or how little anyone uses their vehicle for whatever you think is appropriate.
