Why NOT to leave your hitch in the receiver when not towing.

My dad's hitch was stuck in his receiver and we could not get it out. I hooked a strap to the hitch, put it around a huge oak tree, put it in 4 low, and proceeded to dig four holes in his driveway I could not believe how bad that thing was stuck in there.

An impact like the one you had would've done the same amount of damage with or without the hitch in.

I don't think it is legal. My sister got pulled over for leaving it in while driving in her Ranger in Newport Beach. Too many cops down there looking to get anybody for anything. That was the only reason she was pulled over too. The cop called it a "balljoint." She looked at him confused and laughed and said "my trailer hitch?"

I rarely tow and didn't want to mess with frequently removing the hitch so it wouldn't rust in place. I got one of those cheap plastic 3rd brake lights that fits the receiver and plugs into the trailer jack. If someone bashes it - $10 and it can't rust to the receiver. Quick and easy to swap for the hitch if I do tow something.
