My dad's hitch was stuck in his receiver and we could not get it out. I hooked a strap to the hitch, put it around a huge oak tree, put it in 4 low, and proceeded to dig four holes in his driveway I could not believe how bad that thing was stuck in there.

An impact like the one you had would've done the same amount of damage with or without the hitch in.
My thoughts exactly.

I agree with what the other poster said. I leave mine in, but when you work out of the bed of your truck u will eventually give yourself one hell of a bump while grabbing something or putting something into the bed..

Exactly! Mine has been there from day one, and will continue to be the whole time I am alive and owning this truck. A Durango hit me in my last F150 and I had no damage and she had a receiver hitch stuck through her bumper. When I pulled away, it puller her bumper off partially, but it hung on by one bolt. Hahahaha. At that point I didn't even think of my back. Lol. She was on her cell phone and in a rush. Served her right!

I went to tractor supply and bought a tractor pin with an oversized hole and a small padlock for mine. Done for under $10. Those locking hitch pins cost as much as a cheap hitch and ball combo.

I don't think it is legal. My sister got pulled over for leaving it in while driving in her Ranger in Newport Beach. Too many cops down there looking to get anybody for anything. That was the only reason she was pulled over too. The cop called it a "balljoint." She looked at him confused and laughed and said "my trailer hitch?"

I rarely tow and didn't want to mess with frequently removing the hitch so it wouldn't rust in place. I got one of those cheap plastic 3rd brake lights that fits the receiver and plugs into the trailer jack. If someone bashes it - $10 and it can't rust to the receiver. Quick and easy to swap for the hitch if I do tow something.
