Default Why 1st and 2nd gear?

My truck has SelectShift and Manual option on the gear shifter. I can put it in M and go to 1st and keep it there. I can also move the shifter all the way down to 1st gear. Same concept on 2nd.

So why does ford have 1st and 2nd gear on the center console if we can use M or SelectShift (to lock out gears) to achieve the same thing? Or is 1st and 2nd actually different so there is a reason for this option?

Seems like ford should remove both and give us 2 more inches in either the center console box or a larger cubby in front of the shifter as it could definitely be bigger.

Anybody know the real answer of why?

Interesting observation, M or limiting top gear does make the physical gate redundant and I'd rather have the space for side by side cupholders.

Thought this thread was going to be about going into manual mode and from a dead stop, selecting third gear to launch. With boost, launching in third isn't bad, second works even better.

8 cupholders isn't enough for ya? How many beverages do you need?

I see your point about 1st gear. But, I have used 2nd in situations where I needed less chance of tire spin, mud, snow, etc.

Is there still a torque derate when moving shifter to 1-2 like there used to be on 2004-2008 models?(easier throttle modulation when off road for example) If so that could be the difference. M mode no derate but physicaly shifting into1-2 would derate? Just throwing it out there.

if you put it in 'M' you can start in 1st, 2nd or 3rd gear to prevent slippage.

when you move it to the 1 the truck will engage bands on the first gear set to prevent slipage. If you put it to the 2 it will start in second for reduced tq on take off. After that you can put it in M mode for manaual shifting.

The 1/2 option is still very usable.

But the point is you can put it in M mode to 2nd and stay in that gear which would be the same thing as moving the shifter down one more to the 2nd on the center console.

I don't need more cup holders (could see it if you are someone who chews), I would like a bigger cubby in the front or larger storage bin in console buy more curious why our trucks have redundant 1st and 2nd gear functionality.
