I don't have that. 4.6l 2v with the 4 speed + overdrive. I don't have any tow/haul option

OK its definitely still there in 4wd. Actually I'd say it's worse. Seems in 4wd there's an added howl or groan. Now that I'm really paying attention to it. It's also at low speeds, really pronounced from 20 mph to complete stop. Guys at work are saying to check the gear oil, which I will tomorrow. But there's nothing leaking under there, I definitely checked. Can't be the tires right? These wouldn't give a weird sound like that, at low speed?

I doubt its tires.

I wonder if its coming from your transfer case. Check the fluid in there and see if its burnt.

For the record, I'm trying to record the sound. But it really doesn't come through on the recording

Do you have the limited slip? You can check door sticker for axle code. Clutch packs could be going out.

That's open Diff.

Your on the right track checking fluids. I would also check the tranny fluid.

By chance would you have a go pro? You could stick it in various places to record, and where ever it is louder, would be the area to concentrate most on.
