Default Whirring sound when I let off the gas

Tried googling and searching. Maybe I'm not putting in the right words.

2010 stx 4x4 3.73 rear 76k miles

I noticed this a month ago, went away. Now it's back.

Pretty much every time I let off the gas over 40mph I get a whirring sound. Best way to describe it is, a similar sound a small car manual transmission makes when you back up.

Any guesses as to what I might be dealing with soon?

Thanks

Integrated Wheel End. It's the thing inside the hub that connects / disconnects the hub to / from the CV axle when you go into or out of 4wd.

Integrated wheel end.. it allows for engagement and disengagement of your 4 wheel drive system. It is vacuum operated and if leaks you can get a partial dis-engagement of your IWE and it will make a weird sound. Just a thought due to the fact it's a very common problem. one way to see if this is your problem is to engage your 4WD system while you hear this sound and see if it goes away.

Awesome. Thanks guys. I'll check in 4x4 later. I have the manual shift 4wd. Don't that means anything though right? Still vacuum operated

If the sound is coming from the rear end its not IWE. IWE is only on the front end.

Do you have a rear locking diff?

Nope. 2010 stx. I don't think they had that option in 2010. I could be wrong

I gotta ask the obvious, are you driving in Tow/Haul mode?
