I have a 2012 FX4 SCrew with the OEM 20" wheels and Pirelli tires. I moved to Alaska from Texas in June. We just had our first snowfall about a week ago with about 4-5" on the ground now. I haven't driven in snow for a long time and never anything like I'll be driving in up here. Right now I'm in no position to buy winter tires so I put 6 60 pound bags of sand in the bed. I'm trying to stay out of 4wd as much as possible right now because most of the roads have been cleared now and I don't want to unnecessarily add wear to the drivetrain. My question is should I position the sandbags over the rear axle or all the way back against the tailgate to gain the most traction?

When I lived up there, we always would put them directly over the axle.

Right above the axle is best in my opinion.

Really?

6 bags x60lbs =360lbs /2wheels = 180lbs of extra weight per rear wheel best case.

Agreed.

More the better if you're not concerned with a slight decrease in MPG's.

I usually run around 4, not sure how much of a difference it makes, but I'm used to driving on snow and ice.
