Default When to change oil for a new truck?

Just curious - I have heard different opinions..would like to hear from the gallery about it.....
I have a new FX4 - just about to hit 1000 miles. This is my first new car in 10 years. In the past I remember changing the oil the first 1000 miles, then every 3k after. The owners manual say 7500 for the oil change which Im fine w/ when using synthetic. But what about the first 1000? To Change or not to Change...that is the question.....

Thanks
-Rob

Most wait till 3k for the first one, I did! Its really up to you as its your truck, and whatever makes you feel better.... The rest is all Opinion!

I do initial around 1000. Then run synthetic usually Pennzoil platinum at 5-6k changes. Oil filters shouldn't be pushed further IMO and the oil looks like it needs changing by then. I drive my vehicles hard and in lots of stop and go traffic so for added protection and my vehicles always running strong keeps me on that schedule.

It might not be nessecary but certainly couldn't hurt anything. I always do the first oil change early on any new motor.

FWIW...............I do 1K, 5K and every 5K after that. I usually have 40 to 50% oil life left when I change the oil, but for me, it's worth it to know my engine has fresh oil at these intervals.
Admittedly this was a GM engine --- but on my last new car, which had a magnetic drain plug from the factory --- when I changed the oil at 1K, it looked like someone had poured very fine, pure black, metal shavings onto the end of the drain plug. The metal shavings literally stuck out about 1/2 inch all around the end of the plug.
That convinced me to change oil in a new engine at the 1K every time!!!

The 2013 with the 5.0 engine comes from the factory with FULL synthetic. 7500 is just fine. You can spend $25 bux and send a sample to Blackstone labs and let them test the oil. They will let you know how much life is left in it.

I did the first one at 5k miles and after that when the service light comes on. I did the second oil change recently when the light came on at 13k miles.

Like others have said I like to change fairly early between 1-2K. My second oil change is with blended oil and from then on out will be Pennzoil Ultra (supposedly it's one of the best oils for DI motors :shrug

Unless you have a 6.2L engine, the owner's manual does NOT advise 7,500.

Today's engines are much cleaner and more finished out of the factory. No need to change the oil at 1,000 miles. Yes, I can provide UOA's to back up this statement. Ford engineers get paid a bunch of money to figure what your engine needs and when it needs it. There is no one number fits all. On top of that, oil technology has advanced leaps and bounds in the past 15 years.

I follow the owner's manual directions of using the IOLM, which seems to work quite well, and not more than 1 year. My first change happened one year from the manufacture date of the truck. My short trips around town seem to trigger the IOLM around 3,000 miles.

Vehicles with a 3.5L, 3.7L or 5.0L engine, are equipped with the

Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor (IOLM) system which shows a message in the

information display at the proper oil change service interval. This interval

may be up to one year or 10000 miles (16000 kilometers). When ENGINE

OIL CHANGE DUE or OIL CHANGE REQUIRED appears in the information

display, it’s time for an oil change; the oil change must be done within two

weeks or 500 miles (800 kilometers) of the ENGINE OIL CHANGE DUE or

OIL CHANGE REQUIRED message appearing. The Intelligent Oil-Life

Monitor must be reset after each oil change. See the Information Displays
chapter.
