Question What's inside stock muffler?

I would like to know what is inside the stock muffler. In the last week I lost some hair like stuffing twice (that I've seen) from my exhaust. I googled it, and it looks like carbon fibre stuffing from inside the muffler. Went to my dealership for a scheduled oil change, and ask the service department if that was normal. I want to make sure I won't damage my engine if the exhaust gets stuck.

The dealership told me that Ford stop using that stuffing "many" years ago... I have a 2010 F-150 screw 6-1/2 with the 5.4L with 75,000km. He told me he was going to contact Ford directly.

Stop back today on my way back from work and the service manager was almost laughing at me, telling me somebody must be pulling a prank on me. But I know a friend of mind who changed his muffler on his 2009 because of that. I would like to show to the dealership a picture of the inside of a 09-10 5.4L muffler.

Thanks for any help.

OEM mufflers consist of many baffles but NO packing or any material that could possibly be what you describe, everything inside is welded in place.

I would have to say the person that told you someone was pulling your leg is correct.

OEM Looks something like this.

The muffler(s) used on the 2009+ F-150s are actually quite free-flowing .....

Yup, don't see no kind of packing material in there just as I said, all baffles welded in place.

I'm almost tempted to dissect the OEM muffler sitting in my garage but I already know what's in there and might need it in the future.

That or I'm just a packrat.

Had the same thig happen to me at about 100k. Was on the highway and 20' streamer behind me. Thought someone was screwing with me until I search and found others had the same issue. It was slightly throatier sound after I pulled the rest of it out.
BTW...2009 4x4 screw 5.4l

You and the OP have an aftermarket muffler in place.

Thanks for the answers and pics.

That's what I'm starting to think. I've bought the truck used last December; could it have an aftermarket "to look stock" muffler? I'll try to compare with the other F-150 at work tomorrow to see if I can spot a difference.

One of the guy at the parts at the dealership said it could come from the cats upfront. I thought they were only made of the honeycomb stuff. Could they also have a stuffing to cut noise?

Was told by someone that the hair fibers are stuffing from the resonator. Happened to me today, a streamer of what looked like a blonde wig hair blowing out the tailpipe. 2013 f150 fx4 5.0 bought 2017 from ford dealer. Found a kind of fiberglass matting out the tailpipe. Ran a 1/4” plumper handsnake up tailpipe about 10 ft in, right about where the res is and kept pulling out this hairy synthetic wig type stuffing. Did this 7 times till nothing came out. Don’t know what the res is for. Hit the gas hard a few diff times till nothing came out. Seems to be ok. This stuffing must be some kind of fiberglass, I can feel the itch in my fingers and arms. Still don’t know where exactly it came from.
