Default What's ECO about the 3.5 Ecoboost?

Mine has not gotten better than 17mpg highway, 13mpg city, and 6mpg towing an 8000lb trailer.

Dealer states I have to "wait for the break-in period". Well after 25000 miles, the mileage is not getting any better, if anything slightly worse. I have tried different brands of fuel, even tried premium. Nothing helps.

I made the mistake of paying for 5 yr/100k mile pre-paid maintenance and extended warranty thinking this truck would be a keeper. Now that it is over 60 days Ford will not refund these.

I have had 3 oil changes done by my dealer, and they have rotated tires, checked air pressures, air filter, etc each time.

Anyone have any idea's? I have even put my stock wheels/tires back on (rather than the 20" with 34" tires. NO CHANGE.

3.73 gearing was highly recommended by the dealer as the best all around ratio for towing and economy.

I love my truck, would love it more if there was any ECO in my ECOboost.

I have FORCED myself to drive prudently.... running cruise when I can. Never more than 5mph over the posted limit.

THat combined with the 95L fuel tank... I want my 2009 5.4L back. I could get 23mpg highway and 16mpg city, 11mpg towing.

I admit the eco has more power, and yes it takes fuel to build hp... BUT when 95% of my miles have been empty highway driving, there is NO EXCUSE.

Ive gotten 15.5 mpg for my first 4250 miles driving sometimes with a heavy foot and sometimes trying to get better gas mileage. On road trips I average around 18-20mpg on all highway driving of about 65-75mph using cruise control. Same truck set up as you. I hate how the truck idling constantly decreases the average.

3.73 gears are great for towing, but not for MPG. The type of fuel you are using, elevation you are at and terrain you are covering will also have a big impact on your MPG average. See if you can "test drive" a 5.0 for a day and see if you can get a better MPG average. If you can, there may very well be something wrong with your ecoboost. I get about 17 MPG on average with just over 6000 miles on the odometer, but I live in hill country and can't get fuel without ethanol in it.

The Eco will ONLY get better gas mileage than a V8 if:

1) You do not drive it in stop and go traffic.

2) The ground is completely flat.

3) You keep HWY speed below 65mpg.

The truck still weighs about 6000lb. It still takes a certain amount of fuel to accelerate and put the load up a hill. If you are going by the numbers you see posted here (and other sites), you will go crazy. People always one up the other guy. If you get 17mpg, he got 17.5, the net guy got 18 then 18.5, etc... Others post a true value, but fail to say that they were diving on a deserted highway at 50-55mph to get the numbers posted.

3.73 is the 1st problem that gear set is built for towing not economy. If 95% of your driving is not towing and 8000lbs is your max trailer wt the dealer steered you wrong. my ECO with 3.15 gears is rated to pull just over8000lbs and with the torque of the 3.5 does it just fine and I have averaged over7000miles 20.7 MPG with about 5% towing a4000lbJeep on a2000lb trailer. Thats all on 87 octaine fuelBubbabud

Unloaded I am getting 17-18 mpg. I just returned from a 4k mile trip to Northern Montana hauling a trailer and the mileage sucked. It pulled it no problems, but at the speed we were driving, the engine was staying in the boost.

Worst tank was 9.8 and best was around 13.5. Most driving was 75-80 mph.

I have found that staying below 75 will get the best mileage, also not racing up to that speed will help.
