The same way everyone else mentioned. Just a touch up for something that small, for now. I've seen too many people fix/repaint something like that out of pocket, then get whacked 2 days later. Happened to me right after i bought my truck. Fixed the right rear bumper end (bought it with a scratch there, truck was used)and got hit a week later.


But if i were to paint it. Say the OP was intent on fixing it? I would simply sand out that chip with 400 grit sandpaper. Sand the whole bedside (I'm only assuming that's what panel it is) for a blend, using 800-1000 grit paper. Apply sealer to the spot. Blend out the color, and clear the whole panel. Only downside is the clear may be flatter than the factory, due to sanding it for blend.

Some dent repair places offer chip repair.Have you checked that option?

touch up paint until it is level with the rest of the paint, sand with 1000 grit to flatten it out, then get a lil clear on there.. sand out the clear with maybe 1500-200 and buff... should blend right in

I live in a pretty small town, so I don't really have that much of a choice to choose from when it comes to repairs or anything along those lines. I usually go to San Antonio, but why would I pay someone to fix the chip or scratch when I can do it myself for free?

If they do it for free, then I would be willing to let them do it, but then also usually stuff that is done for free isn't done that well cause it's free and any business wants to make money, not just give service out at no charge!

Anyway, I appreciate all of the comments, suggestions, and instructions on how to fix this little issue on my truck. I will probably get it done this weekend, but I just need to make the trip to grab the paint from Ford.

By the way, this is on the rear bed panel below the bed cap on the driver side incase any of you were really wondering, but it's pretty easy to tell from the picture with the bed cap being part of the picture.

I have a friend of mine that swears by this, and I haven't tried it and not sure I will.

He has a truck from one of those other manufacturer's and has a paint chip in a place he looks at every time he gets in the truck. He cleaned up the edges, asked his wife's assistance to find finger nail polish that matches the color of his truck, and there you have it.

He lives in the country, deals with gravel roads every day, so he basically covers the chipped area with finger nail polish (color matched), and follows up a few minutes later with clear finger nail polish, and repeats this process about every 3 months. I know I know, we have some redneck ways in KS, but honestly I didn't notice it, he had to point it out to me.
