What is this Part For?
Thanks, Texasrat. I think this post (from a different forum) answers the question,

My only question now is if I improve the install or take it back to the dealer and get the same lame weld nut installed.

I noticed a metal on metal rattling last night while driving on a bumpy road to the beach. I checked around underneath and couldn't find anything. Found this thread this morning and checked behind the drivers side left wheel well. On top of the frame and found a loose metal brick. I'll be taking my truck to the dealer for warranty. Thanks everyone for posting on F150forum.com. I love this site.
Took my truck to the dealer and the dealer said that it is a free floating damper and that its supposed to be loose. I asked if the metal on metal rattle is normal and they said yes. Anyone have more on this, I don't believe the dealer.

The metal on metal rattle is NOT normal. It is NOT free floating. When attached to the frame properly, it WILL NOT rattle into the box. It is bolted through two heavy rubber bushings to the frame with weld nuts. Just drop your spare and get under your truck and push it around. If it's still attached to the nuts, it won't hit the box and rattle; if one or both of the nuts broke (as in my case) it will still stay wedged in-between the frame and box, but it will rattle (loudly) and eventually cause damage to the box. Also, if it's no longer connected to the frame through the rubber bushings, it will no longer perform its function of dampening frame vibrations.
It is beyond me why a dealer would not want to fix this under warranty. It's a totally simple job and Ford pays them for it.
If you find that yours is loose from the frame, take it to another dealer, or have your dealer show you the physics of how a disconnected 20lb piece of steel slamming repeatedly into your box dampens vibrations.
Good Luck,

I agree with your assessment and I am sure that the engineers and or customer service folks at Ford HQ in Michigan, would agree too.
Thanks for the info Monkeyboy99 and Norcal-09. I didn't think the dealer was right and have already booked an appointment at another one. Tonight I'll take the spare down and take a good look at the weld nuts and rubber bushings so I can back up my story. I'll update the thread next week.
Whats the part number on this? I need one of these.
Check this out. We went four wheeling to test out my '09 FX4 (SCrew short bed) a little and as we were heading home we heard a rattle in the rear from underneath. We checked as well as we could and didn't see anything and there was no rattle on the paved road to home. When we got home I crawled under the truck and found this big hunk of metal attached to the rear left frame bolted to the top of the frame between the frame and the bed. One of the weld nuts on this thing had broken loose and it was bouncing around between the frame and the bed. My major question is - what is this thing? What you see in the attached photo is all there is (there is no mate on the right side.) There was nothing else attached to it and all it appears to do is bounce around on the frame. Is this some resonant dampener? Do any of you other FX4 owners have this? It's on top of the frame between the frame and the bed, just forward of where the leaf spring rear bolt attaches. It's kind of hidden from the outboard view, but real easy to spot when your spare is lowered. It's about a foot long x 1 1/2" high x 5" wide and weighs about 15-20lbs.
My other questions are - what would the Ford dealer say if I brought this in and asked them to fix it? What if I just left it off?
The blue in the photo is just tape to keep the bolt from sliding out. The last three photos are of the weld nut that busted loose.
Any help is appreciated.
