Default What to look for in 2012 5.0?

Good morning everyone. I just registered here and hoping to become a new member in the Ford family. I currently am selling my Duramax because I have no need for a diesel's towing capacity and maintenance costs. That coupled with the costs of continuing education and modified vehicles, I can't spend the money on it. I'm looking to find a truck (every guy needs a truck) that gets OK mileage, I can start up and go, and is family friendly.

With all that being said, I am planning on going to look at a used 2012 F150 XLT with the 5.0 engine. It is RWD, has 65k miles, a clean title and asking 17.8k obo. The pictures show nothing I could note as a negative, however, I want to come to you all who have more knowledge than myself on these trucks and could help me with what to look for and possibly a price to negotiate.

Thank you for any and all help!

IMHO, that's too much. In 2013, I paid $24K (after trade in, $27.8K without) for my 2013 F150 5.0L XLT 4WD. Additionally, I believe some of the 5.0's in the 2011-2012 model years deal with the incorrectly shaped #6 cylinder (correct me if I'm wrong, folkz). Were it me, I would set a minimum 2013 year, whether it be Ecoboost or 5.0. (Not sure the V6 or 6.2L had any issues in any year.)

Thanks for the input. I definitely don't need hand-holding saying that could work or whatever. Due to my budget, I'm limited in what I can get. Mileage for my budget will definitely be up there.

I read the same thing about issues on the 2011-2012 trucks, but it's also hit or miss. Could get one with the issues, could get one without. Good, valid point and I appreciate it.

A true cold start and listen to it warm up is what I would be looking for other than normal stuff.

What exactly should I be listening for?

Fire it up, and crank the wheel lock to lock both ways a few times, so you can see if 'Service Advancetrac' light up on the dash.

If it does knock off $1800, cause that truck is ready for the inevitable rack replacement.

Thanks man I’ll definitely look into that also.

Anyone else have have any good info for me? I’m semi-new to gas trucks again, let alone fords. I did ask a friend who runs his own mechanic shop and he hasn’t heard issues with 12’s. Not to say he’s 100% right, but he hasn’t encountered them.

If it has heated seats make sure they havent tried to catch the seats on fire. If it starts to burn your leg they are over heating.
If it is the ac and heated seats make sure the TED is working and blows hot air. Usually filters get clogged or the blower motor (aka TED) stops working.

Where are you located? That price seems awfully high. I just listed my 2011 FX4 for $12,000 with 90,000 miles.

5.0L has been a fantastic engine for Ford. Most will knock once warm but I consider that normal. Check for coolant leaks at the reservoir and T-connector (both easy to fix). Check headliner for water damage. Get on it real good and see how it performs.
