My opinion...much of this disregard for the property of others comes from the class warfare mentality of a certain political party who advocate that those who have nice things "didn't earn that".

Crap like this drives me nuts. My old truck was side swiped in a parking lot, put a huge scratch right up the drivers side bed and a decent dent above the wheel well, no note or anything. There is no way the person didn't know they hit me. Just disrespectful a**holes.
Keying someones vehicle is 10x worse in my opinion because there was an obvious intention to cause damage.
Hitting someone could be brushed off as an accident and if the person is decent enough to own up to their mistake its not so terrible.
I just don't get how someone could come across a nice truck like this and think "hey this person obviously saved their money, worked hard and bought something they probably really love....Let's scratch it all to hell"
I'm also a younger guy (24) and I have never once had the urge to key someone's vehicle. My parents drilled respect into my head from day 1. If I ever caught some punk doing that to my truck there would be some serious hell to pay. I'm sorry about your luck, hopefully it all works out for you.
