What I HATE About My New F150!
The running boards!
I bought a 2011 lariat that had the chrome package, so I don't have those round running boards...the stock chrome package ones, if you know what I mean.
I swear my kid falls every time he steps on them and I notice that I turn my foot perfectly sideways to use them; can't just step straight onto them, as they seem like they need to be extended out about 3" or so...if that makes sense.
It's probably because how wide the truck already is that we can't move them out another 6" to allow for 'full-foot usage,' but I think the ones on my Explorer are better...never even thought about them until I got the F150.
Am I alone on this?
Other than that, I love the new wheels.

Same thing on my '10. I was thinking about machining some blocks that I could use to extend them out a bit. I wonder if someone else has already done such?

Yeah, the chrome tube OEM version kinda sucks. It's a tad too thin and the plastic step pad is slippery especially when wet or with snow. They should have used real rubber! Your foot has to go sideways on it unless you tippy toe on it. Lame!
The ultimate solution is to go with the retractable, if you got some serious cash to burn. Otherwise, Once I get rid of my chrome wheels, I might look at some better looking aftermarket solutions.

I have the OEM black platform running boards on mine. They are wide and the footing is stable, and they keep a lot of road grim off the side of the truck.

Totally agree. I don't think I've stepped out once yet when my foot properly hit the running board. The high running boards have saved me a few door dings from low cars, they could just stick out a little further.

After 2 weeks of seeing my son slip off them every day when getting out to go to school, I've decided to crawl under there and see what we are working with and figure out a solution.
Don't get me wrong - they are nice and solid, look good, etc, but ~ 3" too narrow on each side.
