No worries, it will have an Ecoboost claiming 40mpg but getting 14mpg!

My worries are for the RV industry. I see no way that tow ratings can stay in the range that they are now for trucks that are going to have to be significantly lighter with much smaller engines...............unless we can elect a Congress and President who can overrule these artificially high requirements, I agree with the OP that vehicles, trucks included, as we know them today are doomed.
Remember too that cars are going to need to average something like 54 by then. That is not possible in a vehicle anything like the one that is currently in your garage.

The average is for the fleet. If ford has 3 cars that get 40+ and 3 trucks that get 20, thr average will be around 30...

Yeah.......that should go well for the US auto industry. Government has very simply overstepped their bounds with these requirements, and the auto makers are going to be forced to produce cars and trucks we simply may not want to own.
Certainly, all of the auto makers are going to have to invest hundreds of billions of dollars between now and 2025 --- guess where they are going to recoup that money --- right at the bottom of the sticker price....$$'s

Yep, the gov't has their hands in all this. The higher price cars means more in taxes. Plus like here in California cars are getting better fuel mileage so the gov't wasn't making enough money on fuel tax. So they raised the tax on fuel 3-4 cents to make up for the lost money.. unbelievable.

That would be how it works if the formula used basic math. The ratings formula however does not use simple basic math and with bonuses and other allowances if that was an auto makers lineup their fleet average would likely be higher. It isn't the end of the world if you take a moment to be informed about how the system works, and then remember their is a lot of time for change to occur before that limit.
