He removed the halogens, then replaced them with HIDs. Sometimes people make modifications to their truck.

I went from OEM Halogens in my 2012 to OEM HID's in my 2013. A world of difference!! HID's are the way to go. In fact, I will be upgrading mine with a custom set from Raptor Retrofit this spring. If your not doing it yourself and you have e some coin to spend, then this might be a good place to get what you want!

Just to clear up some terminology here,
Retrofit: Fitting non-OEM HID-specific projector assemblies into stock halogen or stock halogen projector housings.
Yes, even OEM projector assemblies can be halogen only. After-marker projector assemblies are almost always halogen only and only some can use the LED bulbs properly without blinding people.
Fitting HID bulbs or LED bulbs into a stock halogen non-projector housing is not retrofitting.
As for which projectors, while there are plenty of options, you are essentially looking at the following options:
Mini H1 - Easy install, not as bright as other options due to small bulb size
Mini D2S - Better light output due to accepting standard D2S bulbs, not the best light pattern
Evo X-R - Accept D2S bulbs and can withstand 55W setups without melting. Throws light further down the road.
FX-R - Same as above, but throws light further to the sides
35W Ballast/bulb: Great light output. Won't melt any projector you choose. Longer bulb life.
55W Ballast/bulb: Will melt some projectors. +~20% brightness. -~20% lifespan of bulb.
Past that, switchbacks, RGB halos, etc is all icing. If your goal is to simply see better down the road and you have minimal experience, I highly recommend doing a simple bolt-in upgrade (MH1 for stock halogen housings, Evo X-R for factor projector housings) w/ a 35w ballast, it should do just fine for you.

Ford should have designed some separate high beams for these trucks instead of going the single housing route. That would have solved most of the lighting problems.

You probably blind all oncoming traffic too. I’ve yet to have seen a single HID retrofit that doesn’t glare like crazy. Hell, even a lot of OEM projector HIDs can blind you in some situations. I do a lot of night driving and I can’t stand the guys with lifted trucks that seek out the brightest bulbs or HIDs they can find. It is bad when I’m driving my truck, and borderline dangerous when I’m in my Mazda on a dark, narrow road.

It's funny because I read all these people bashing LEDs in halogen housings and I disagree. I see LED's in halogen housings all the time where I live and they don't blind me at all. Is it because I drive a truck and sit higher up? I doubt it. Depending on how the LED's are aimed and which you buy matters a lot. My wife has an Acura MDX with the bejeweled LED's and it's stock, but she gets flashed every now and then. It's all in how you view things.

here's a video clip from my dash cam which is high close to the rear view mirror - in eye sight. you can see the coming glare down the road.

Well
Just install want u like. Im going the LED in stock housings. Here in Ontario CDN, it seems no one to the MOT cares. Just as longs as they are listed as the same bulb. Have gone to a few truck shops. They always recommend adjusting your headlights.
