Default Violently shaking rear end!

EDIT: it was the carrier bearing. The F150 has a horrendously designed drive shaft on the long bed screws!

Had to get my 09 fx4 towed today . The rear end started to shake very violently while on the highway out of nowhere. Strange thing is that I can actually drive the truck for a few feet at speed and it is fine. But after a short distance the truck will violently shake until I stop. No fluid leaks, check engine lights, or any other issues for that matter. I believe it is related to my drive shaft, rear end, or carrier bearing. The U joints, while damaged by salt, appear to be fine. I don't think it is related to the transmission because I can shift into every gear just fine.

Any one have an idea of what has happened? It is sitting at the mechanics now, but he won't be at the shop until Monday

Do you have a Limited Slip rear end?

Could be a bent rim on the back tires, a bad shock too? Just guesses

If you have a two piece driveshaft the steady bearing fails and shakes and knocks the living he// out of the truck. It was a very common occurrence with the supercrews or scab 8' box from 09 - 10. Might be the prob?? Good luck

I do have the locking treat option, but the truck was in 2hi. My rims and tires are fine and the shocks are new 5100s. This is like a metal on metal shaking. Very rhythmic, and seems to come from the drivetrain. I was going 45 mph on a smooth road when it happened. Very strange.

I will guess steady bearing as well. It happened to me at 35000 kms. Very common with supercrews in my neck of the woods. The dealership replaced the whole driveshaft and u joints. Back on the road in 2 hours.

Here is the culprit..... ring in the middle is the bearing, just to the right of the universal......

But the whole driveshaft has to be replaced

Loose lug nuts on one or more wheels will cause this also.

Also called the carrier bearing. Good guess. Better than my idea of loose lug nuts.

Post up with what the diagnosis is. If it's the center support bearing, I think it's pressed on. On some shafts, Ford staked the U joints too, making them non-serviceable...
