I owned a 2012 5.0 tuned by 5 star and had no complaints about the motor. Traded it in on a 2014 Eco after test driving...yea the stock eco had that much more power This is a dyno from 5 star and both motors blow away previous Ford motor's BTW a tuned eco is just stupid fun Sorry but had to add my experience

I've often wondered why manufacturers list 'peak power' when they list specs. I think a more realistic rating would be to rate 'average available power'. That is, the average power the motor will generate at any point in its RPM range if given full throttle. Yes, if listing power ratings like this the numerical values listed would come down greatly but would much more accurately reflect a motors ability, especially for towing.
The reason a stock eco-boost is better at towing than the stock 5.0 is it has a greater 'average available power' when not revved up near redline then the 5.0 due to its flatter torque curve. This is also true for diesel motors, although good gearing will go a long way towards staying out of the areas of RPM curve where the power output is very bad.
Given the dyno data in spreadsheet form for torque or power, it would be simple enough to calculate this. A lot of other devices manufactures in different classes are forced to represent this 'average' power rating, one primary example being stereos. The max power is near meaningless, the RMS power is what matters.

The reason manufacturer's list peak power is because it's the biggest looking number. Simple economics you know? Bigger numbers look better and lots of people just don't know and as a result they think, "I got all this HP!"

Ya absolutely. I use stereos as an example because regulations have forced them to list the average power output the amp can sustain rather than peak. Manufacturers there still try to trick you by advertising the peak power output though. Its stupid though and results in threads like this one lol

My tuned 5.4 hauls my kayak like a BOSS!!!
Seriously, both motors in question are awesome. Heck, my 2010 5.4 has been a great workhorse and has towed some heavy long distance loads without issue.
Anybody remember the 80's & 90's? Lol. How did we ever manage to tow anything??? The point is, we did. Those old enough, have done so much with so little, they can now do anything with nothing. Lol
The fact that we can even argue these awesome numbers of modern engines is a testament to how far trucks have come!
Pick one and run the wheels off her. Happy truckin'!

On more meds than ymeski
Ok, both motors are great, kayaks are easy to haul and butt hurt is prevalent. I think we have reached the end of this threads usefulness.
