Exclamation Heater Duct

I have a long history with Ford vehicles and really feel they are a great product. My 2009 F-150 had no heat on the drivers side, floor duct. The vehicle is a lariat model with dual climate control. My 2007 Ford Edge had this same issue. The dealer said that Ford requires them to replace the entire heater duct unit under the dash. this requires that the entire dash, steering column, side air bags, all right back to the fire wall be removed. This is a huge effort and tedious process. The dealer has been really great about it but has taken the vehicle out of service for 20 days as the replacement was not readily available. This is a huge issue, why in the world does engineering make this so difficult? Has anyone else had a similar issue?
Metro Ford in Schenectady has been great at service.

not sure why they took the truck out of service. if you get heat thru the other vents & defrost works... I have warm feet so I could survive without it I guess...

my wife's buick had the heater core plug up soo bad that there was no heat period. she was soo mad when the mechanic siad it would be about $800-1,000 to fix as they have to tear down the whole dash to get to it. she bought toe & hand warmers at the local discount store to get thru the winter. we were scared to buy a car at the time (payments) & she wouldn't let me try to fix it.

ford must be building the distro boxes with all the little control doors & such as one unit. I looked at the parts chart for our car when I was checking into it, the dual climate zones add a ton of parts, so it's all or nothing due to complexity & time to replace. so to keep the build times down, it's probably dumped all in with this box.
