Ultimate compound on 2011 f150
I have a machine buffer that came with a foam pad. I am using meguires ultimate compound. Well, the foam pad tore when I went to put it on (6" pad and buffer). I bought a box of microfiber bonnets to go on the machine. The bottle says use foam or terry cloth bonnets for the compound but you can use the microfiber for the polishing compound.
They are both abrasives and essentially a polish. Shouldn't the microfiber pads be good enough for the buffer and the compound? I really don't see why they wouldn't. The terry cloth seems more harsh then the microfiber???
Or do I have to get in the truck I just washed and clayed and go to autozone and get foam pads (if they have them).
Please hurry and advise! Will be dark in 3 hours!

6" buffer. Bought it at autozone. Not very high powered, but appears that it will do the job. I could of gotten the drill attachment, but that seemed like overkill for a casual user and it was expensive.

I also have ultimate polish. On that bottle it says I can use microfiber bonnet. My goal was, if the ultimate compound did the job I would return the polish. Doing both seems redundant as they are both essentially polishes. I am just trying to remove some water spots and micro swirl marks.

Why do you need to compound? Are you trying to remove scratches? if not, a compound is probably too aggressive. That autozone "buffer" is not going to be powerful enough for any kind of paint correction (which is what a compound is for). Everything you ever want to know about buffing www.autopia.org

Do not use abrasives if you're new to polishing with a buffer. You will cause damage. You need to use a specific pad with the type of polish/compound being used. Bonnets won't work.
Also, as said above a buffer will not work with polish and compounds. A buffer is for a finishing wax. You need a random orbital polisher for that type of work.

Take a look at griots garage and Porter cable. Both make awesome machines and offer personalized service for your application. Autogeek is also a great site for info if you're unsure of how /what to do
