Default Tuner making truck shut off to save power?

Hey everyone, i've been tuned for about 1k miles now and I noticed whenever I shut the engine off but leave accessories on (listening to music) the truck shuts off to save battery. Sometimes it's fine but it'll shut off after like 5 minutes now. Used to be able to sit in my truck before class and listen to music, now sometimes it won't even stay on with the key on. It was only once I got a tune and I was wondering if this happened to anyone else. I'm using a SCT live wire, 5* tuning. I've reset the KAM multiple times.

Can't speak to tunes, but I can speak to the battery saver message. I have a 2013 5.0 also and the Battery Saver message you are getting when you play the radio (which turns on the screen) is caused by you not charging the battery enough. That is in turn caused by you not driving long enough drives frequently enough. If you aren't driving at least 30 minutes or more every few days, and then you are playing the radio, you're running the battery down. The truck is doing exactly what it should be doing.

I didn't sit playing the radio, but I did take a lot of short drives and used the truck infrequently. I bought a Battery Tender Plus, and never got the message again. I saw it mostly during the winter, but every now and then during the summer. I actually bought two more Battery Tender Plus, one for our cottage, and one to keep our boat battery charged.

What he said^^

It may very well just be a coincidence with it happening after the tuner, but.... Just thinking out loud here... do you leave the Livewire plugged in all the time? Does it light up when you are listening to music? If you are leaving it plugged in, I'm wondering if the tuner is drawing enough power for the battery saver to kick in sooner than it used to.

Thanks for the reply but I drive 35 minutes to school and 35 mins back 5 days a week so I don't think that's the problem!! I have a couple battery tenders laying around but I'd rather not hook it up every day!! Maybe the battery is getting old and just happened to happen around the same time I tuned the truck? I don't know

Oh yeah I didn't even think about that. Livewire is always plugged in but screen is only on when I have the key on. It'll happen though after a 35 minute drive to school so it isn't like the battery is low on power

My battery went out within 6 months of buying the truck new. Replaced it with a wally world battery and never looked back, they have a 5 yr warranty.

Also hooked up a solar maintainer since my truck sits in the sun 8hrs/day, keeps it topped off. My daily commute is less than 3 miles round trip. Haven't had any more issues.

Another thing to keep in mind, if you have any added accessories grounded to the battery, remove them and ground them where the oem grounds are on the passenger fender near the battery, the reason is because the battery monitoring system cannot operate properly due to those grounds.

Lastly, there is a TSB about getting that message that requires the system to be upgraded to the latest calibration, that will have to be done at the dealer or any shop with IDS.

If your truck is like mine, if you leave most anything plugged in while the truck is off, it'll drain the battery enough to give you the battery saver message. I used to have that problem when I'd leave my Garmin Nuvi plugged into the 12V port on the dash--especially if I didn't drive the truck for a day or two--even after a 20+ minutre drive. If I remembered to unplug it, I wouldn't get the message even if I didn't drive for a couple of days.

These days I use Waze on my phone more than the Garmin (being alerted to speed traps is nice), but I have to remember to unplug my dash cam if I don't drive every day.

I'm thinking that battery tender is in my future...

That is clean how you installed that solar panel

I suppose it's time for a new battery, I just found it odd the second I tuned it it started happening. It'll go away after a couple of days of driving on a tune. I just realized (I forgot about this when I made this post) that I tuned it the other day from 93 race to 93 perf/tow and it started happening again. I'll see if it goes away on it's own.

I like the solar panel idea, we had something similar on our boat, but I drive this truck over an hour everyday so I don't think it's necessary.

But you guys are right, it's probably best to buy a new battery. With winter coming, I'd rather not have to deal with a bad battery. I want to say I'm still on the original battery!
