Default Tuner info?

I've seen a lot of talk about tuners on here and I was just curious about what they really do? Probably sounds like a silly question, but I'm new to them. Are they just like the "chips" people used to put in their vehicles?

A chip was a physical device left plugged into, usually OBI and some OBII systems. A tuner reprograms the PCM of a vehicle, altering dozens to hundreds of different factors that are set very conservative from factory. And a tuner just plugs into the OBII port, runs the program, and unplug afterwards generally.

So they basically unlock the full potential then? Is there a difference in brands?

Yes and Yes. Id stay away from Hypertech and Bulldog. Edge and SCT are the most popular by far.

I'd suggest SCT but then I may be slightly biased as well. :-)
