Tuner on a 5.4L for MPG
I am debating a tuner. I have read most of the threads about tuners. I have a 5.4 SCREW 4x4 3.55LS and am getting 18-19 on the hwy as long as I kept the "egg" under my foot. I drive 20k miles a year for business which is all hwy. In the summer I tow a small trailer however looking to upgrade. Overall I put 30k a year on and am looking to keep the truck for 240k.
So even a 1mpg gain will give me an ROI of a little over a year at the soon to be $4 a gallon.
Has anyone added a tuner just to gain MPG? Will there be any decrease in longevity?

I plan to have mine dyno tuned in the next few weeks to try and extract a few more mpg's. The tuner that tuned my 97 for the past 7 years said by getting it on the dyno and really fine tuning it i should see maximum gains. Even though everyone claims to see no improvement from a cold air intake i plan to add one to the mix while its on the rollers to see if any performance gains are had. I dont see how it couldnt help im my quest for more mpg's also.

You're getting pretty good mileage now. There's only so much more a programmer can do, not saying you can't get a little gain. With the miles you're putting on, even .5 mpg gain will get a return.
The problem with "economy" tunes is that the power is so lacking that mileage gains are usually not realized. A performance tune for daily driving and a tow tune for trailer will be your best options for mileage gains and maintain power.
A properly tuned programmer will not cause detrimental affects to the engine and will extend the life of the transmission due to less slipping.
Right now for the 2010 the SCT X3 or if you like gauges the Livewire both with custom tunes. SCT has the transmission figured out, Edge is still working on their strategy. Here are a couple places to talk to and get the device and custom tunes:

I have great interest in this thread. I drive about 2200 miles a month and am in need of all the help I can get for mpg.
So far I have added a bed cover, 1 1/2 to 2 mpg increase, Flowmaster 70 exhaust and an Airaid cool intake kit. These have gotten me to almost 17 mpg in mostly city driving. The Flowmaster may have hurt the effort ( it just sounds so damn good).
Please, someone, come up with a way to increase mileage on these trucks.

What kind of mileage increase have you seen? I put anywhere from 2500 to 4000 miles a month on my truck, so I am anxiously trying to find something as well.
