Here is what the manual states:

Trip A/ B
Use the arrow buttons to choose between the following trip
options.
Trip A/ B
Trip time
Trip distance
Fuel used
Avg mpg(L/100km)
Odometer (displays in lower line and may display in other menus)
Press OK to pause the Trip A or B screen/press again to un-pause.
Hold OK to Reset, this resets the currently displayed trip information.

Trip time: Registers the time of individual journeys.

Trip distance: Registers the mileage of individual journeys.

Fuel used: Shows the amount of fuel used for a given trip.

Average MPG: Shows the average distance traveled per unit of fuel
used for a given trip

I think my arrow buttons only allow me to select between tripA and B.

ggallant1 - Exactly my same experience.

That is a very valid point. However, it's still not 100% clear what it is for. Yes it is obvious it points down to the mpg avg (which is never right when compared to hand calculating) but at least you'd think there would be an indication in the owners manual that's what it was specifically for. It's really no big deal, just my curiosity has got to me, haha.

When I fill up, I always write down what the vehicle says MPG is AND calculate it, which I then enter into Quicken when I put in the transaction. That way I can see the discrepancy if I need to, usually the averages are fairly close. Note that if you fill on a very warm day you get in less gas than you used, and opposite on a cold day. Also, if you goose the nozzle (right here), you get more in. My 1998 Explorer took 2.5 gallons more with goosing.
