2012 f150 with auto/ manual transmission issue
My father recently leased a 2012 f150 it is automatic but it has the manual button on it so you can select a gear just like a manual. The problem: when he puts it in D the manual selection appears as well and it goes up and down through the speeds as he drives. if he uses the M function it requires him to shift. This has never happened before when he was using D is there an issue here?

If you're talking about the screen in the dash, it's telling what gear you're in. If you want it to go away, just hit the + button while in drive, and the numbers go away..

And if you want to lock gears out in drive, you can hit the - button and the trans will only shift to the gears that are still lit up on the display.

Im talking about the screen that shows the gears you are in, when in automatic mode should this be showing up? I know it is suppose to be there when it is in Manual mode.

Your looking at it wrong, your choices are Tapshift (D) or Manual (M). D lets you limit the top gear that your truck can go into, hence why it is visible all the time, M forces you to manually adjust the gear.

When you put the level in "D", and then push the + on the shift lever the trans gear numbers will come on. You may have bumped the button when you moved the lever. I've done that before. In the "M" mode they come on automatically. You don't have a problem, all is well.
BTW, if the gear numbers come ever time you pull the level to "D", that's fine also. After I had my tranny reflashed (reprogrammed) my numbers are always there unless I turn them off.
