Default Trailer Brake controller

Does anyone know how much it runs to add a trailer brake control in a new F-150? Is it possible to just buy it and put it in yourself? I hear that once its installed the dealership has to so something to the computer but not sure.

I did an after market, and it was very easy to install. I'm betting the OEM Ford specific ones are easier yet. It took me about 1/2 hr, hardest part was deciding where to put it. Most put them right where they're meant to go, just to the right of the steering column in the slot. There is a harness prewired back there under the dash for a plug-n-play fit. And yeah, some require a "flash" of the system. My aftermarket did not require the flash.

The OEM controller is miles ahead of any aftermkt controller 2 screws and plug it in 5mins tops to install and then take it to the dealer and have the pcm flashed to recognize it most dealer will do it for1/2 hour labor. your selling dealer might do it free

I first bought an aftermarket one, and couldn't find a good place to mount it. I returned it and bought an OEM one. I installed it and my dealer programmed the truck for free (after 10 minutes of arguing about it). I'm very happy I went with the OEM one. The sway control works awesome and the dash interface is nice. I also like how it keeps track of the trailers' mileage.

I go back and fourth between the OEM and aftermarket. OEM almost always costs more and isn't always better. That being said, I'll probably go OEM just in case there is a problem with it, I know where to take it. I am in the market for a camping trailer so I need to be ready for it if I find the right deal. Also thinking about putting air bags in. Not sure what brand or options I have with those either. Lots of choices.. I didn't think towing was this difficult.

I have found the oem one to be much better than any aftermarket one I have used in the past. As previously mentioned, the added benefits of the oem being integrated are worth it also. As for air bags, the firestones seem to be the most popular by far.

The OEM far outshines aftermarket. You could never get the integration you get with the stock one. The closest you could get is like a P3 but then you aren't that far apart price wise of just getting OEM.

Op if you search, there is a nice big thread that has part #s, install pics, and instructions for the tech so they know exactly what to do to program it.

I did mine $165 and install takes mins. Took it to dealer and was charged $20. Just used it yesterday and am glad I have it.

I was thinking Firestone as well. Just basic kit also. Won't be towing that often but when I do it will be anywhere from a 2-8 hour drive over varying terrain so I think it's worth the investment.

If you do a search there is some good info on this site. If you hve the center console like my KR it's going to take a few hours. The part of the dash that just snaps off(with the A/C vents) has a screw in it and the console hides all of it. Also you need to have the 7 and 4 pin trailer connector at the back. If you don't have the seven, thee is no power going to the brakes. And yes the dealer needs to flash the computer to tell it the brake controler is there.
