Towing Question...2012 F150 5.0 Supercrew....
Hi and thanks for your help. I have a 2012 F150 5.0 Supercrew shortbed. I know the towing is rated more or less at about 7,800.
Question....how will the truck respond on towing about 10,000. Where exactly will it do poorly. There is a "Tow" mode button on there for what it is worth.
Thanks again.
Just added below.....
2012 4x2 Supercrew, 145" wheelbase, 5.0 motor, 3.31, 7100 tow package

Well....probably not very well!!!
However, we need a LOT more info about your truck.
I'd recommend that you look on the driver's side door and get the GVWR and the payload capacity ("max weight of passengers and cargo should never exceed xxxx lbs"), look under your rear bumper to get the hitch rating, and then go to the "Towing/Hauling" section of the forum and post up that info along with your rear end ratio, 4x2 or 4x4, and whether you have a Tow Package, Max Tow Package, and/or HD Package on your truck.
Here's a link to the Tow/Haul section: https://www.f150forum.com/f82/
The experts over there will tell you what they think!!

Can it pull 10,000? Probably but stopping and handling are another story.

You should NOT exceed the mfg rated tow capacity. If you want to tow 10K then buy an Ecoboost or F250/350. IF you ignore the tow rating, not only are you putting others (and yourself at risk), but a state trooper could shut you down. Not good. What would it do to the truck? The entire drivetrain would be strained, and stopping that load would be a challenge.

It's obviously the far greater torque. The 5.0 may as well be a na v6 in comparison. But that doesn't help, the op. You truck should not exceed its rating by that much. Prob has 3.55 axles... Your truck would struggle.

It's marketing sales gimmick, they have same size brakes, axles, springs, wheel base! Just because it has more torque doesn't allow thousands of pounds more!
There is way more to towing than a motor!
I knew you were a fan boy for the Eco but.......

Yes more to towing than a motor. But.... There is a need to pull it to speed in a reasonable time. The 5.0 is far weaker and moving 10k lbs for the 5.0 could be a problem. It sure would be for your 4.6. The rest of the truck is the same.

Retired and loving it!
If anything happens when you are towing THAT much more than the truck is rated for, your insurance coverage/agent will cut you loose --- you will be out of pocket for any damages...........I know, I know...same brakes, same frame, same tires etc.......but the situation you describe is a liability attorney's DREAM case against you.
