Towing with 5.0 vs 5.4

If you can tow it with the 5.4 the 5.0 will fill in nicely. What advice are you looking for exactly? I recommend using the Tow button located on the shifter. Or even utilizing the manual shifting feature.

Absolutely no. the 5.0 has a 6 speed tranny. Makes towing alot more efficient in my experience. Also in towing mode with the 6 speed it utilizes all 6 gears where as with the 5.4 in tow mode the truck never went into overdrive.

What is it about the new 6 speed that will allow it to tow a larger trailer in overdrive without problems down the road?

The difference is that the 4 speed tranny behind the 5.4 wasn't designed to tow in OD, thats why the TOWING button disables it. The 6 speed was designed to tow in 6th gear. If you want to though you ensure that the truck doesn't go into 6th gear by either using manual mode or in auto press the down shift button once to "hide" 6th gear

His 2010 5.4L has a 6-speed transmission too... in fact it's identical. D'oh!
