This is gonna be a general answer and hopefully someone can back me up with the numbers.... The max tow package is rated at a higher tow weight..... I think.... It has heavier shocks and upgraded class of trailer hitch receiver. I'm not sure on the specifics though.

If u have ecoboost you already have the bigger rad. Max tow gives you 11,300 tow with ecoboost. I don't have max tow, but have 9800 tow.

The leaf springs on the tow package and max tow package are the same part numbers as per the parts list in the bill of materials. You can check for yourself on max tow VIN# 1FTFW1ET6BFB15817, and regular tow package VIN# 1FTFW1ET9BFA59307. Call any Ford dealerships parts department and give them the last 8 digits of those VINs and ask them for the part number on the leaf springs. Don't be surpised if he gives you the same part number for both VINs. However, the leaf springs are different in the heavy duty payload package.

I can understand how they get more towing from an "upgraded bumper" reciever hitch. What I don't understand is how they get more payload if everything else is identical. I think Ford just cut payload from the regular tow package to have less than the max tow so it will be that much more appealing and saleable since you can buy all of the other stuff aftermarket. That's just my opinion.
