Had a magnaflow on my 03 5.4 f150 and it was too quiet for me. Dont remember the length. Had Flows on Mustangs and loved them. If it makes you feel better, Im in the same boat.

I had a super 40 Flowmaster si/do custom set up w/ 5x18" tips on my '10 2V 4.6. The truck sounded incredible all the time, definitly had the "truck sound" I was after. Some drone at cruising speed but the stereo and mud tires took care of that.
Not the best pic but to give you an idea what I'm talking about.
I went with a si/so 18" magnaflow on my '12 and dumped it after the axle with a 5x10" tip. Honestly I'm a little disappointed in the sound at idle...too quiet. At WOT it sounds mean and there is no popping when slowing down. I know people said there is very little drone from magnaflows but mine is horrible at 65+mph. I'm sure a lot has to due with the placement of the dumped exhaust but all I have to do is turn up the radio and I'm good. I've considered getting rid of the resonator but worried the drone would be unbearable.
If I had to do it over again (and probably will on my '12) I'll pull the resonator and put in a si/do 18" magnaflow and run custom duals to the back and dump them where the bedsides meet the bumper. The magnaflow just has more of a refined sporty sound...if that makes any sense.

4 for Magnaflow, 4 for Flowmaster. Crap
The Magnaflow was $700 (from the dealer- I don't mind giving them my money) and the MBRP is going to be $480. Basically cost so they can get it out of the warehouse. Tough call. Thanks guys! I will update when I have finally made up my mind and get the install done.

When I was searching for exhaust setups on our Mustang I did a lot of youtube searching. I don't know how many videos are out there for the setups you are considering, but listening to all the different videos helped me out some. Still a tough decision though. Good luck!

Keepin' the lights on!
On my silverado 5.3 I ran a single 3.5" cat-back exhaust. First I had a short (14"
I think) magnaflow. It sounded good very little high-way drone (couldn't tell with the radio on) but at idle was a little louder than I wanted it. Then I installed a Flowmaster 70 bigblock/rv muffler on it. Twice as long and twice the weight. It was quieter at idle (which I wanted). Sounded close to a stock 6.2 escalade. However, on the high-way or WOT it was much louder and a lot of drone. Performance felt the same.
So my vote goes to magnaflow.

The Macho King
Magnaflow is a straight through design so it will be quieter at idle, however they have a lot better flow than flowmasters. They are stainless steel and will last the lifetime of the vehicle. I have a magnaflow catback on my mustang and it is very well made in both fit and finish. Likewise, the flowmaster on my old truck rusted out in a few years at the outlet. I will always rep magnaflow.

That's funny, I put "straight through" magnaflows (actually a whole catback no cats) on my gto and lost 4rwhp/17rwtq, compared to a STOCK catback no cats + 40s. maybe it was in the tune
