Top Tier Gas? Techron? Hogwash?
Hey Gang,
Getting ready to give my truck her first fill up and I'm determined to do whatever I can to make her last as long as I can. So ... is it worth driving way out of my way to get a Top Tier gas? I have a local QuikChek by me that seems to always have cars in there so the turnover would seem to be good.
If I don't use a Top Tier gas, would you guys recommend Techron every once in awhile? If so, how often (miles)?
Thanks !

I try to fill up at the same stations and use as much ethanol free as I can afford. I only use Sunoco if I am getting 10% ethanol fuel. I like consistency. Every company has a different recipe of additives. Most of the base gas is the same. The condition of the station makes a big difference to me too.

I try to stick to top tier brands. In my previous vehicle, sticking with top tier fuels would get me a bit better gas mileage. Using gas with quality detergents will help keep your engine clean.
Gas from places like sams club, costco, bj's, etc is among the lowest quality gas out there, from what I have read.

My problem is I have to go way out of my way to get a Top Tier gas station otherwise I'd just buy it and be done with it. So the next logical question is "is it worth it?".

i have filled up company vehicles at many different gas stations in different provinces over the few years i have been driving, and have not noticed any difference and that is due to government regulation that sets a minimum standard that all gas has to meet, i think topteir just means there are more additives that are not necessarily needed for engine longevity. a quick wiki search brought me to some stuff, and that is that top teir was initially created to stop injectors from clogging, it mandated to amount of ditergent in the gas, a bottle of injector cleaner every 10,000 or so miles would net you the same result

Guys, your top tier gas is all about marketing. Yes each brand has their own additive, BUT.... the additive is 1 quart for every 10,000 gallons. So, figure dumping a quart of additive into a tanker truck that delivers fuel to the stations. If you feel that small amount of additive is worth 20-30 cents more a gallon, then go for it. Otherwise they are all the same. You do realize stations get filled by all brands. If a refinery is in turn around or has issues they will buy fuel on the spot market. Your Chevron fuel may actually be Marathon or Tesoro fuel that was supplied to them on their shutdown. Or better yet, regional areas have deals with refinery's. If a certain area of the US doesn't have a Shell (or any brand for that matter) refinery near them. They will make deals with other refinery's to supply fuel to their stations and vice versa. Yes, they will use their proprietary additive, but we've already discussed that hogwash.
I have done many experiments with "top tier" vs. Costco etc.. and saw NO difference in MPG.
FYI, I work for an oil refinery. Just letting you guys know from the inside out.
