TIRES!!! again
I know this gets beat to death... I have worn the letters off the search button looking and reading posts on tires. I am kind of like the poster over the weekend who wants a larger tire but doesnt want to lose a lot of MPGs... kind of want my cake and eat it too I guess.
I currently have the stock 275/55/20s... I want to go a larger tire and had thougth about the 275/65/20 but from what I read the loss of MPG is substaintial... I dont really need an E load tire but a P doesnt have the tread depth and the largest size is 275/60/20.
SO... a compromise might be to go to a 285/60/20 or even a 305/55/20.. which best I can tell would kind of be in between OEM and 275/65/20.
Problem is not many people make these sizes. I was leaning toward the Michelin AT2 but it isnt quite as aggressive as I "think" I want. I have had several sets of BFG ATs and always liked them but thought they might be a little too aggressive for what I want... I have never owned the Nittos and from what I read it is a love hate deal... some love'm some hate'm but all seem to agree they are heavy and kill fuel mileage. I know... its a truck... why sweat the fuel mileage... Cause its money I guess... I like to keep as much as I can.
SO... after all that. I am wondering if anyone has the BFGs in a 285/55/20 or a 305/55/20 they would post some pics of and tell me if they will rub on a 4x4 with no lift. I looked through the chart on the front page and got no answer... I run the OEM platinum wheels so if you have that set up it would be awesome.
If you know of another tire in the 33" range I would be interested in some pics of it on stock wheels as well. Dont care for the duratracks or other mud tires.
Thanks,
Greg

If you are concerned about loss of gas mileage, pay more attention to weight and width rather than overall height. A 305/55/20 will be an inch shorter than a 275/65/20 but weigh on average 5 lbs more. Weight and rolling resistance are the two main causes for mpg drop. More height will actually help you up to a certain extent. I think a 285/60/20 would get you what you're looking for but very few tires are made in that size, one of which is the duratrac. 275/65/20 (34") and 275/60/20 (33") are both very popular sizes and you should be able to find any tread pattern you want. 275/65/20's & 305/55/20 will both drop your mileage about 2 mpg due to them being heavy Load E tires. You'd be hard pressed to notice a change in mileage with a 275/60/20 P rated tire.

I guess everyone has their own idea of what they like and dislike. For some reason the Duratrac remind me of those old recap mud tires my step father used to put on the hunting truck every year when I was a kid. It was a 67 Ford 2wd that I beat the crap out of trying to drive when I was about 13 years old. Only time it was used was to carry the dogs hunting. Those tires aways looked cheap and fell apart most of the time.
The Duratracs tread pattern reminds me of those I guess.

Your best bet is a 275/60/20 if you want a taller tire with minimal effects on mpg. Stay away from wide and heavy tires. Another thing, BFG ATs are great. They look good and work good in many conditions. However, they tend to kill mpg.

yokohama AT-S 275/60/20 33.5"
During my personal search for the lightest weight (fuel economy), largest tire to fit on a levelled truck I ran accross the yokohama geolander AT-S in a 275/60/20. Tirerack says this tire is 33.5" and only 43lbs. Although I don't love the look, I am interested in good fuel economy. Does anyone have any experience with this tire?
I currently have 305/55/20 Nitto Trail grapplers and although they look amazing and ride great they are horrible on gas. My lifetime fuel economy (ecoboost 3.73 gears) for 50,000km is 17.2L/100km (13.7mpg).
