Default Tire Width Question on Stock 18" chrome clad wheels

So I want to put some new tires my my stock chrome clad wheels that came on my 2010 XLT. Currently there are the stock tires of 275/65/18.

I have been told by the dealer that I can't go any bigger then 285 since the width of my rim, which I think is 8 inches. The tire will bubble out in the middle causing premature wear.

I am reading on here that folks are going to 295 and even 305 on the stock rim.

I would really like to see some trucks with the stock 18" chrome wheel with a 285/65/18 Nitto or similar tire or even one wider.

I do apologize if this has been covered. I feel like I almost get the answer then I get side tracked.

You need to find out the exact width of the rim, then compare it to the specs on the tire and see if it will fit. Any local tire shop should have a tool that wraps around the tire and can tell the rim width. I have not done this but I plan on getting the same tires you mentioned as soon as I sell my old truck and free up some money. Post a pic and let us know if you get them before me.

I put Nitto 295/ on my old f150 17" rims and got 60,000+ miles otu of them, rotated and balanced every 6,000 miles.

The factory 18" chrome wheel is 7.5" wide. You can verify this by looking on the sticker on the driver side door.

And yes, the 285 is the largest 'recommended' width for this size wheel; however, I have seen one to two sizes wider on this rim. Note: Some tire installers will not go past the recommended tire to wheel width.

I have the 285/75/18 Toyo A/T's on my truck and I am happy with the look. The width fits perfectly within the fender line and I have no rubbing issues at full lock to lock. I wanted a taller tire to fill the wheel well and give me more vehicle height and some additional ground clearance.

NorCal09 does your truck have a leveling kit? If my math is correct that is a 34'' tire. Do you have any rubbing problems or ride issues?

What did you do about the stock spare size ? I have the same tires as you. I want to use the 17" spare wheel and put a 285/75/17 on it and hope it fits under the bed.
