Actually I tried to find a Ford that would fit the bill, but unless I wanted to go with a V10 or a 6.0 stroker or a 6.4 stroker there just wasn't anything out there unless I wanted to spend $50k on a used truck and get a 6.7. None of those engines really appealed to me, the V10 is solid, but a pig and the strokers can be trouble according to a friend who's a diesel mechanic. He told me if I wanted diesel either go GM or Dodge (see above for my feelings on Dodge).

So I bought a 2007 GMC Sierra SLT 2500HD crew cab shortbed 4x4 Duramax with 41k miles on it. Nice truck, one owner. Lost $5k on the F-150 so I wasn't too upset. Its not as much fun to drive as the 5.0 in the F-150, but it'll for sure pull anything I need safely and that's what I was looking for above all else. It didn't seem very smart to throw 10,000 lbs behind a truck rated to tow 7700 lbs imho....

Good choice. GMC has a great 3/4 ton oil burner and in Denali trim, you can get a heated steering wheel.

I had that same truck traded for my current f150. I just did not use the diesel enough to justify the cost. Every thing Ina diesel cost double if not triple the cost. Although my truck had 135000 on it and had never spent a day in the shop for repairs. If,you tow a lot you made the right choice.

Very nice choice. Old body style or new?

There's a 5.0 f150 that can only pull 7700? Or did someone read the wrong tag?

Its the new body style. Neat truck, certainly did not expect to buy it when we cruised through the lot easter sunday.

Nope, didn't read the wrong tag. I'm no towing novice by any means. I researched this to death. My truck (5.0 with 3.55 rearend) had a GVWR of 7200 lbs, a GCVWR of 13,500 lbs, and a tow capacity of 7700 lbs.

The 5.0L with the 3.55 rear axle ratio has a tow capacity of 7700 lbs, the 3.73 has a tow capacity of 9300 lbs. Hindsight.......I would have gone with the 3.73 and got the larger tow capacity, but then again I had no intention of towing with the truck. The biggest trailer it ever towed was 1000 lbs and that was once or twice, other than that it was a glorified car.

I've pushed the it to the edge and beyond with a 1/2 ton before, I got away with it, but it was only a 70 mile trip. You know you pushed it when people walk up and go "are you really towing that??" I hooked a 15k lb loaded dump trailer to a 2004 Nissan Titan and towed it through the mountains a couple times, it did it just fine, was it safe? Nope. Would I do something like that again? Not in this lifetime.

I'm sure the F-150 could have pulled the trailer we bought, but we would have been overloaded and that's just not safe for us or other people on the road. I'd rather not get into an accident because I can't stop my truck and trailer due to being way overloaded.......I'm sure no one wants to get hit by an overloaded truck/trailer either!

Nice. I had a late build 06, (same motor minus alot of the emissions junk) was a great truck. I wonder daily if I made the right choice getting rid of it

Very well said. Congrats on the new truck.
