Default Tie Down Hook Position

Hello all, I've noticed a difference in the forward tie down hook positions in some of the F-150s and was wondering if there was a way to ID the position based on the VIN number. Some of the hooks are positioned about 4 inches higher than others, and I was wondering if you could use digits 5-7 in the VIN to ID the position. I went to my local dealer and asked the sales people if they knew the difference between the two locations and nobody had an answer. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
D

What year were you looking at? What trim level? What bed? Anything else to describe would be helpful. Any pics?

The VIN will not reflect, in any character position, the difference.

You have me curious.

Thanks.

Here is a picture of a '11 XLT that has a tie down in the lower position.

and a picture of an '11 XLT with the tie down in the upper position.

I'm interested in model years '05 thru '11 and want to find a way to identify which models have the tie down in the upper position. I was thinking that maybe the styleside vs flareside bed may be the determining factor. But based on pictures above that isn't the case because I believe flareside was discontinued in '09 and the pictures above are '11 so that debunked my theory. Thanks again for your help.

Looks like longbed/shortbed differences to me.

Edit: I had pics of the rear positions & it looks like you're looking for the location in the front.

'11 FX2:

I don't have pics of these with the other vehicles. Pretty sure the '12 FX2 I have has the tie down in the same location. I'll look later today.

Are all of those pics from trucks having the same bed length? Maybe the 5 1/2' vs 6 1/2' lengths determine where the tie down is located.

I work at Ford (Woodhaven Stampling Plant) on the line where we make the body side inners. The 5 foot bed has the higher tie down location, and the 6 & 8 foot beds have the lower tie down location.

M-FX4 do you think their is enough meat in the side inner to move the mount up 5 inches or so to allow room for this rod holder to mount?
