Default For those of you who bought out of state, how "painless" was it?

I've been looking locally for a truck since the middle of November and have not gotten anywhere with the dealers around here. So I decided to venture out and see what's available. I found a '14 STX SCAB that fits the bill only a hour and a half away. Seems to be a good price as well; all through email thus far. However, checking this forum as I do from time to time, someone mentioned that they bought their truck out of state and had it shipped and still came out way better than locally. I've noticed Fairway Ford in Ohio and a few dealerships in Texas seem to pop up in situations like this. Based on the prices shown online at those various dealers, I could have a pretty nice XLT SCrew for a few thousand more than the STX I've been negotiating. Of those of you that have done this recently or in the past, how was the process and would you do it again? And how accurate are those prices?

Side note: one of the problems I have run across is that I work really crazy hours and I'm not always awake or available during normal business hours to talk to salespeople which seems to turn a lot of them off in dealing with me.

Thanks in advance

We bought our truck in PA, and live in WA.....completely painless transaction. They collected the sales tax that our state requires (which they then send on to WA), and we paid the licensing fees in our state when we got home. We traveled home on a PA temporary plate.
Just a suggestion, but have you given your local dealer a last chance to match your out of state price? Just tell them you want to buy from them, but if they cannot match your price on the exact same truck, the they just lost this sale.....then walk if they don't.

I bought one at Fairway Ford last summer in Ohio, I'm in PA. I don't remember any issues. Prices were real, I offered and they accepted another grand I think off their listed price, and I see now the '13's are even cheaper than I paid. I did it mostly over email, with one phone call at the end.

Only thing was about a month later PA sent a letter and made me send documentation that the price paid was real, they said it was unusually low, haha.

I bought my truck from a dealer in PA (Washington Ford) and I live in MA. The transaction was fine. The only issue I ran into is the way my state deals with sales tax. In MA you pay the sales tax when you register a vehicle. You pay tax based on price paid OR suggested retail; which ever is higher. Even if you have a family transaction for $1, you pay based on suggested retail. The issue I ran into: I traded in my old truck, but, the dealer I bought from is not registered with the Ma Dept. of Revenue as a vehicle dealer. (why would they, out of state). Because the dealer was not registered I had to pay the sales tax on the selling price before the trade. Esentially I paid sales tax on my trade twice because I paid the first time I bought it, and then its value was not considered in the purchase of my new truck. Check with your state on how they handle sales tax. Other than that my purchase was great. I got a great deal and a very eassy transaction.

Bought mine in Maryland and live in Connecticut. It was actually a fun transaction. Took a friend with me and took a 1 way rental from Enterprise. Drove it down to Maryland had a good trip, dealer had everything ready to go. Temp plate and I MADE SURE they got the truck registered in CT. Cost me a few bucks more but I so hate dealing with DMV.

Had a nice ride back and even stopped in PA and bought myself a new dump trailer. Put a temp plate and hauled it back to CT. The price I got was so far under any dealer here it was a no brainer. Saved myself almost 4 grand so I was very happy.

If it's a good dealer they already have everything in place to give you a smooth transaction. BTW… it's really a lot of fun to drive your vehicle home. Great way to get to know the truck. I've done it several times and usually fly in and do the deal and then drive home. Bought a vehicle in Nebraska and drove it home…… it's a fun trip!

Default Easy

I live in California and purchased my truck in Idaho. I paid California sales tax there. I had to make sure the truck was California emissions certified.

No issues here, bought truck in Oklahoma sand registered it in Texas. I believe I had ten days from date of purchase to register, inspect and pay taxes to my home county here in TX. Only special requirement was a slip during inspection saying something about it was bought out of state but met all TX inspection requirements.

Had all my own financing, just took them a check from the CU.

I'd call it completely painless, we buy all our cars in Oklahoma now... They have been consistently easier to deal with and have great deals that far exceed what I found at TX dealers.

We live in Michigan 8 miles from the Ohio line and have bought as many vehicles in Ohio as Michigan. The dealers know how to deal with it and do most of work for us. I do need to stand in line as the Secretary of State to get my plate transferred--they can't do just that part for some reason.

And to top it off we use a credit union in central Illinois. I call them, spend 10 minutes on the phone updating our income and such, get a call back with approval maybe 30 minutes later, and go to the dealer and make my deal. They fax the sales order to the CU who calls me to verify and overnights me the paperwork and a check to me and the dealer.

I would also say it is painless. I live in NM but purchased the truck in Cortez, CO ( at Keesee Ford, I highly recommend them). I could've paid them the NM sales tax to send to NM or pay when I register. I chose to pay the tax when I registered. Keesee beat every deal in NM by at least $3k plus they had my truck in stock. Only one dealer in NM had a truck like mine but wouldn't budge much from sticker. My wife and I drove to Cortez after I got off graveyard and ate lunch. We then went to the dealer. They had everything ready. I signed on the line, they paired our phones to the truck, and we headed for home. It was definietly worth the trip.

The next Ford I buy will be from there as well. I tried to keep my business local but if they don't want to deal then they lose out.
