Default tailgate lock

I was in the shop getting a warranty item fixed on my tailgate. When I was leaving the supervisor who was fixing it mentioned that my tailgate was unlocked. I said "okay, should it be locked."

He went on to mention that it should be locked because people will steal them? I have had a truck for a long time and did not ever hear of someone stealing a tailgate? He said it was pretty expensive to replace.

I live in the DFW metroplex and that used to be really common. I am not sure how much it happens anymore but I can not get over hearing about it almost once a month, back a few years ago. I think people just got smarter and are locking them now so it cut down on the number of thefts. Ether way I always lock my tail gait now so I don't have to worry about it. I am looking in to getting the automatic lock put on the tail gate so I can use the remote to unlock it too, but that is just something that I think would be cool.

Not only that, but there is a member whose tail light was stolen off of his 09 and the only way to get the tail lights off is to drop the tailgate. If it's locked, you prevent all three items from going missing!

It can take less than 30 seconds to detach your tailgate from your truck. Ford makes it easy to remove for the owner and thief. Locking is a good habit but also a pain at times. I like the idea of Ford getting it to lock when I lock the doors. Maybe on the 2011?

I always forget to lock mine, but yes I would keep it locked to keep from it being stolen. Like it was stated earlier, it only takes a few seconds to pop your tailgate off and move on! It's a safe way to safe yourself the hassle.

wow I don't think I ever considered for one moment that somebody would steal my tailgate - I am going to lock it from now on!
