Thanks for interesting replys but I have a 80 acre pasture and throw bails of hay in the back and driving across and the tail gate just jumps around. my old Ford didnt do this so was just worndering.

I'm guessing there is probably a torsion spring to help make lifting the gate easier. You'll want to somehow disconnect the spring.

Yep. The old tailgates were a lot heavier. Especially as you go further back in time.
