The Zune HD was actually really good, its just the original zune was destroyed by the ipod.

I agree. I went to buy an iPod Nano (didn't want a full on iPod) and when I compared the iPod Nano with the Zune HD (2x the capacity, HD touchscreen, slightly better audio quality, etc. for an extra $20) it was a no-brainer. I'd be using it to this day if the screen hadn't gone kaput.

FYI, the port would likely still have power. The software is just ignoring it.

SYNC v4.4 Breaks USB2
Ford told me that they had explicitly disable voice commands for USB2, and as I mentioned in the op, it no longer works on mine.
But it does still have power and by switching the plugs under the dash, I've accomplished the same thing I used USB2 for: USB is now hidden and the exposed USB port next to "line in" is USB2 and can be used for charging a device.
The issue of the reduced number of "grammar items" is still a huge PITA and as a software developer, I find that what Ford did in reducing this capability without warning is unconscionable.
Making it worse is they have (or are willing to provide) zero documentation, so determining the maximum number of songs you can have and still use voice commands at the track level is a tedious matter of trial and error, and can take a long, long time to figure out:
1. put music on device
2. let SYNC index ("Indexing...please wait")
3. let SYNC create speech commands ("Creating speech commands...please wait")
3. are there are too many tracks for voice commands?
4. if no, add more music, goto #1
5. if yes, delete some music, goto #1
For me, after spending hours to get perfect ID3 tags, it worked out to about 5350 tracks, down from ~12,000 in the previous version.
I hate Ford for this. The rest of the truck is great, but this has been such an annoying, inconvenient experience for me, and Ford had been so totally unhelpful that I will never buy another Ford product. I've decided that while the new QNX system may be great, if a flaw is ever discovered, I'll be able to count on Ford to either do nothing or make it worse in their attempt to fix the problem.
And for the record, when I start the truck now, the input that SYNC 4.4 connects to seems to be randomly determined, but it usually isn't the last input I was listening to. Here's what's SYNC is like on my truck now:
I have reset to factory defaults, done multiple master resets, disconnected the battery for 1/2 hour, and had the dealer look at it.
It used to work consistently before the upgrade. Now it is broken, Ford can't or won't fix it, and won't provide the files to roll back to the previous version. And I know they have them...

- USB2 deactivated for speech commands.
- Capacity for accessing music using voice commands reduced by approximately 50%.
- SYNC randomly disconnects the paired phone.
- SYNC randomly freezes (locks up the whole system) and then reboots when playing music from USB.
- SYNC does not reconnect to USB when I restart the truck.
- SYNC does not reconnect to "Bluedooth" audio when I restart the truck.
- SYNC sounds drunk and says "Bluedooth" instead of "Bluetooth"
- SYNC's voice recognition no longer works reliably (It used to recognize most of what I said. Now it has a hard time, especially when I ask it to dial a number).
- SYNC sometimes doesn't connect to the phone at all when starting truck.
- SYNC sometimes doesn't start at all when I start the truck.

glad I read your post ^^^^
I was thinking of doing the update. I think I will leave it alone. USB2 is my favorite creature comfort in the truck. It works and I don't want to make it not work.

I just found out about the USB2 and ordered the cable for it. I also updated the Sync before I read up on it. I guess I'll find out if it works.
For the guy who asked about how to add the USB2:
