Default AFE Magnum Force Cold Air Intake...Problems

Thought I was smart being one of the first to install a new AFE Magnum Fore Stage 2 Cold Air intake System, put it on, and wow...neat sound. But over time, noticed under medium to hard acceleration or while towing that the engine was surging. In to the local dealership twice for what they diagnosed as a misfire, and now this...

Canada law is different than USA law. Jimmy Carter passed the Moss Magnusen warranty act which basically states the OEM cannot void warranty for use of another manufacturers product. Not the case in Canada.

I was told to take the intake off, or Ford would void my warranty. OK, I'll play along.... took the intake off and VOILA!!! The problem has gone away. No surging, no "misfire". Sure it does not sound as neat now, but honestly I do not think there is ANY power difference. The ear plays tricks...we correlate sound for power, in this case I think the stock system is honestly a great flowing intake, and other than the sound dampening 'mufflers' mounted all the way up the intake tube, it flows just as good as the AFE or for that matter any other aftermarket system.

So... I have a slightly used AFE Magnum FOrce Stage 2 intake system for sale... $100 less than what I paid for it.

No takers? Anyone guess as to why the 'surging' was caused by more airflow? And why it does not happen with the factory intake back on?

My guess would be that you are running lean.If you get a tuner and compensate by altering the factory tune, you should have no problems.

best option for a tuner? Local shop wants $600 to do a dyno tune, not so sure I want to go that way, as what happens if you have to go back to Ford and they reflash or overwrite the "custom" tune? With a handheld programmer at least you can put the factory tune back in before getting warranty work done can you not?

Can the factory tune not compensate for more airflow? What is all the talk of the computer 'relearning' its conditions? Not in this case?

I would use a SCT tuner. The factory tune will freak out with a different intake trying to keep the A/F ratio optimized for emissions purposes. If you disconnected the battery when you installed the intake and the computer didn't re-learn after 3 drive cycles and it won't correct itself.

what would one expect to pay for an SCT tuner? Which one to go with... I like the ability to have it as a display in the cab - gauges replacement.

it does flow better, ho much I do not know...but enough to make the engine run lean and cause the surging. It sounds a heck of a lot better too - not too obnoxious, just enough to know you have a V8 under the hood!

$399 USD and you can get mail order tunes for it as well.

Try Troyer or VMP and list what you are using and they can get it pretty close for you.
