Super cab room
#51
Just purchased a 2011 scab about two months ago. I was on the fence a while between scab and screw. Finally purchased the scab due to the bed size, the scab does have quite a bit of room...just depends if you want room inside or outside I suppose.

Looking at trucks, 2013-14,and everyone tells me to get a Super Crew for the huge backseat but I have a hard time paying $5k more for all that space in the back. I also hunt a lot and feel like the short bed would limit my gear. I don't have kids but plan on it in the next couple of years. My question is, for the guys with Super cabs do you regret not getting the crew? How do car seats fit in the back? From the pictures it looks like there is the same amount of leg room in the back of a 2013 f150 Super cab as there is in my buddy's 2012 Silverado crew cab.

Definitely appreciate everyone's input, seems like it's a split preference. The 6.5ft bed with the screw isn't really an option, to my knowledge, due to the fact I'm looking for an STX and my budget is $30k. Guess I'll just have to go with whatever I find the best deal on when the time comes.
I bought a 2013 STX Super Cab late last year and find it has good rear leg room if the driver and front seat passenger aren't real tall and need the front seats further back. A month ago I came across a 2012 XLT Super Crew, used, Certified Pre Owned, and bought it. I was absolutely amazed at the space available behind the front seats that my Super Cab doesn't have. It will definitely be easier to get the grandkid's safety seats in and out of the Super Crew than the Super Cab.
As another poster pointed out, carrying plywood, etc. one would still have to drop the tailgate in a 6.5' or a 5.5' bed. I don't think a 5.5' bed is a disadvantage. As for max payload weight capacity, the differences between the two types of cabs depends on the engine. Both of my F150s are 4x2 145" WB and have the 3.7L. The Super Crew is rated for 20lbs. more payload in that configuration. Other engines, drives and WB vary the max payload ratings.
If the 2013 STX had been available as a Super Crew I would have gotten that one over the Super Cab. The 2014 STX is a great value package now that it is available in Super Crew and 4X4.
I am happy with both, but really enjoy driving my wife's Super Crew (Yes, she gets the bigger, better optioned F150 XLT).
Maybe a year old Ford Certified Pre Owned Super Crew might be a consideration for you. I got mine for less than 30K with Ford CPO 12mo/12K miles warranty that starts after the remainder of the new vehicle warranty expires in another year. You can also purchase a Ford ESP warranty on top of that, so you could end up with a truck that has already lost the new vehicle depreciation (which you don't pay for) and have a longer warranty for a lot less than buying brand new.

I'm in the process of buying a bigger truck than my current Nissan Frontier King Cab (suicide doors like SCAB) and been using Ford's online dealer inventory search for several weeks. In any config other than base XL trucks, most in stock are SCREW body style. Dealers order what they know will sell, i.e., style, engine and popular options. Resale will likely reflect those preferences when time comes.
While I don't need a SCREW, I'm now rethinking my own spec config posted in my intro post:

Its a reality check, actually, 'cus MSRP so-equipped, incl 6.2 and 402A pkg comes right at $50k. Dealer I'm working with discounts nicely but current 2014 incentives through July7 aren't so great and waiting more than another week or so isn't an option with window for special orders closing. I'm asking myself whether buying a more practical Raptor makes sense in SCAB when resale is likely to be lower with that body and engine. Makes cost of ownership pretty spendy me-thinks. Same dealer has a nicely equipped 2014 F250 SD SCREW FX4 6.2 on the lot likewise discounted but with prevailing Ford incentives nearly twice that of 2014 F150. Cost of ownership on that SD truck at resale would be much lower.
BTW, I have a Leer topper on my Frontier in combo with Bedrug Bedmat over factory sprayed bed coating. Due to the suicide door dance in parking lots others mentioned, I keep one of these cheap morter mixing tubs in the bed to keep groceries and other stuff from rolling around. Its a handy outdoor wash basin when towing my travel trailer or as pooch bathtub.

Just addressing this. The Max payload is not a function of the engine, it is a function of the axle load rating minus the vehicle weight.
To get the most payload rating in an F150 you need the 7-lug axles instead of the 6-lug. This only comes in the 6.5' or 8' bed options.
The difference between a max payload and non-max payload truck is around 600 pounds keeping the same engine.
The ecoboost vs 5.0L is only a 10 lb difference alone.

I bought a super cab a little over a month ago because my local dealer had them marked down 13000 off msrp and as long as I don't lean real far back it's fine with my three kids behind me and I'm 6'5" now my kids all are big enough to sit facing forwards with my oldest being 6yrs old and standing 4'4" and my younger two still in convertible car seats I've put over 3000 miles on her already and it's been real comfy I find my sitting as if my kids where behind me even when I'm alone it's got to the point where it hurts to sit and drive like I did when I was a kid

After reading and looking online I think I am going with the Scab. I went and looked at trucks on Sunday and I just think the 5.5 bed on the screw will fill up fast with a dog kennel, decoys, waders, etc. Plus I travel for my job so if I have a scab no one will want to drive therefor keeping the miles off my truck haha.
