ON my 2011 way before weep hole was in vogue [caught a lot of internet flak on this forum] I drilled and tapped a hole for 1/8 pipe thread installed fitting and rune 1/8 tube to a catch bottle mounted behind grill to monitor what came out, other benefit no drip on drive or residue on truck.

Did you get a lot of crap in the catch bottle?

I too would be hesitant to drill a hole in the intercooler, so regardless of the opinion of others that it's no big deal, I'm with the OP, but not because of oil spots on the driveway. If something needs fixed, I'd prefer to actually fix it the right way (spend the money and get the added benefit of a new intercooler) than to bandaid it and drill a hole.

I live in New Orleans (very similar climate to Houston) and I just recently had the shuttering problem with mine at almost 48K miles. The first time it happened was on a rainy day when I got on it hard to pass a few cars. It was definitely a little scary. Truck didn't want to get out of its own way and the check engine light was flashing but would eventually went away. Ran DCT and came up with misfire on cylinder 5. Did some online research and figured out that it was most likely a spark plug issue. Changed to NGK Iridium plug. Same issue 4K miles later. I have now installed Ford's new plug gapped at .030 and seemed to fix the problem for now. However, I do still have a rough idle at start up. I have considered changed the CAC to a new aftermarket unit but depending on who you talk to some say that works and some say it does not. I am also not so willing to drill a hole in my CAC. Especially since I am considering trading it in soon the last thing I want is a dealership telling me they wont take the truck on trade until I put a new intercooler in it. Decisions decisions.

Forgot to mention mine is a later model 14 with the latest form of intercooler shield (top only) Ford recommends. Also second time check engine light came on DCT showed misfire on cylinder 2.

I thought the latest update was no shields at all. My Aug of 2014 build 14 Ecoboost has no shields at all and I was told that is the latest strategy.

Maybe its not exactly a shroud but mine has a solid black piece on the top. May actually be part of the CAC. No other shrouds. Build code on the latest CAC is AD for the 13 & 14 models. If you have any other build code you do not have the latest version of Fords CAC.

Very little so little in fact I removed the fitting and and installed pipe plug in the hole. I live in the arid south west desert. If I was in Seattle might have been different.

My brothers 12 ecoboost showed a misfire on cylinder 4 I think and we pulled and cleaned and regapped the plugs and changed the boots and that has seemed to fix it. His idle smoothed out and no more hesitation. We also changed the air filter. That was 4-5 months ago. We also drilled the weep hole. He has had it serviced at the dealer twice since and they have said nothing about it. Unless you know it's there you'll never see it.

Mine is running fine now. The only issue I currently have is the rough idle at start up. Mine is also tuned so I don't have any problems with get up and go except when I had the shuttering and check engine light which has since been fixed with the change to the Ford SP534 plugs gapped at .030. I don't know if the rough start up is enough to make me drill the weep hole as I see plenty of people have done it and love it but there are a lot that of people out there that are strongly against it and seem to have some good reasoning. The other side of me says maybe if I do drill the weep hole maybe I'll wake up a whole new truck I never knew I had. Some people say performance and transmission shifting has changed with the weep hole. Idk only time will tell for me. If I can get a good trade value it may be gone before I have to worry about it anymore!

I actually had the shudder last week on my 2014 eb. I had to drive from Cinci to Columbus (90 min drive) in the rain, was there for 3 hours, and then drove home in the rain again. Stopped to fill up for gas, and then hammered the throttle when merging back on the highway to beat a semi truck and my truck fell on it's face, started shuddering, and the engine light came on.

It was embarrassing, the semi truck actually had to get in the left lane and pass me because I couldn't accelerate. 10 or so seconds later all was fine again, but dang that was scary. I should be able to depend on my truck to get up and go when I need it too.
